As asinine as this is (a "zero tolerance" policy enforced by total zeroes, apparently), the idea that the parents may file a lawsuit is not far behind on the disproportionate response scale.

Perhaps the problem of overreaction on the part of the parties of the first part and on the part of the parties of the second part could be a consequence of there being too many law schools?

Now, come on guys, we need to treat that school principal in a good Christian fashion.

Don't mind me and my tiny gun.

    Just kidding of course.

Remember these are kids. If she lets him have his toy gun, the kid with the 3" gun says why not me, etc etc etc. The only reasonable person here is the father it seems.

The mother's already looking for a payday. Not to pull the old "In MY DAY" card. But in my day (3rd grader), I got punished for talking back to the principle by being made to clean up a massive pile of garbage the gas station next door had dumped onto school grounds. This was almost exclusively old oil and various automotive parts, chemicals, and rusty metal. I sliced my hand open pretty bad on a rusty gas can, which I would up having to get a tetanus shot over, and was not allowed to clean or bandage it until after I had finished the ~3 hr job.

Agreed. The whole thing is one over reaction after another.

We've read one side of the story. We don't know the history of the child, parent, other parents or any problems that may have precipitated this. Numerous scenarios come to mind and not all of them are unreasonable.

Considering how we write of a distrust of the media in other threadds, I am surprised we jump on this one as if the facts presented by the media are the only ones necessary and the absolute truth. Often, in situations such as this, the parents have the bully pulpit and can say what they want knowing the school can not because a minor is involved.

I'm not taking sides, just advocating fairness.

    Ok, I'll bite.

Down here we would sent the kid home to get a real gun or rented him one.

After seeing this on the news, and reading a couple articles, I get the impression that this isn't the first time there has been an issue with this kid and his toy gun. But yes, it is ridiculous - on both sides.

    On a somewhat unrelated note...

Law schools are money makers for universities. If a school opens one, there will be no difficulty filling the seats and at ~50k a pop/year - it's a worthwhile venture.

Not that I think it is a good idea or that it helps improve the quality of the profession.
