Straight Razor Sharpening / honing

Greetings all-

I've got an old straight razor I picked up on e-bay, simply marked "Sheffield" with no other markings.. Anyone know anything about it? (I know, haha)

Anyhow, just wondering if there was anyone in Canada (Ontario?) doing honing for those of us who don't want to mess up what could be a nice razor.. I'll post picts if requested..

it was the last razor made by Maxwell Sheffield before he left the business to become a broadway producer. you can tell by the pitting that it's at least 500 years old.

Seriously, it's hard to tell just by the description you've given, if you wanted to show pictures, it might help out a little in IDing the razor, Even if it wasn't an unknown cheap chinese knockoff with the brand name "sheffield" (there's at least one brand of knife manufacturer that has the brand "stolingen" prominantly displayed on their knives, what's in a name? not a lot when it comes to the chinese market) it could be anywhere from ten to a thousand different razor manufacturers and brands.

As for honing, I'm sure there's someone out there who'd offer the service to you, even if you have to send out via mail, for a decent price (is there any reason why you're asking for a local hone miester in particular? apart from the "I don't wanna be away from my babies any longer then I have to" instinct we sometimes have)

I have a couple "Sheffield" razors. There were apparently a number of manufacturers who felt their name wasn't worth stamping on their steel. They're fine razors in my experience though.

I knew it! I thought it was at least 700 yrs old though as it's sheffield flint rather than metal..<g>

Fair enuff, picts below... I don't believe it to be a knock off, the patina in the metal seems real enough..

Just asking for local just out of trying to keep sane with the postal rates. Moment something hits the border, the rates seem to triple. And of course, that would be going two ways. The quicker time sure is nice too, but way more so the cost..:)

Hard to say, apart from the fact that it looks to have a LOT of hone wear.

it's definitely not a Chinese knock off, but apart from that, I can't narrow down who the manufacturer is.

Apart from that, your guess is as good as mine..
