What's new

My Guess... 3017

I've broken through the bottom of my Razorock Tight Buns soap today. I'd guess I've got another 6 to 8 shaves left on it. It's time to start thinking about which soap to do next.

Last night, I slayed the Proraso dragon and mounted his head on my wall. Slowly but surely, it slid down the wall and fell into the deep abyss that is my trash can. Solid cream but not my favorite. The strong menthol and chemically scent made it rather painful to use. It was great for the first two days, but continuous use is another story. Definitely won't be replacing. I have a brand new puck of Proraso white soap. Should I bother keeping this or should I trade it for something else? How do they compare?

I'm leaving for a weekend NYC getaway today and will be using the remaining scraps of Barrister & Mann Vetiver, Heather and Clary Sage. I have a puck of Jabonman on the way - the first soap purchase since I started 3017ing 3 months ago. I am eagerly awaiting it's arrival PLUS a Weber DLC & Shavecraft 101. Ahh yes. Relief of ADs :).

I'm thinking about creating an uber Frakensoap with about 10 samples I have laying around in my cabinet so I can knock them all out with one fell swoop. Has anyone else tried this before? I was foolish and didn't label some so I'm clueless as to what they are.

As stated above, it's been 3 months now that I've been faithful to one soap at a time. It is the only way to shave! Thank you Johnnie Gold for this nugget of wisdom!

Ugh! Awful experience with the MWF last night. I prepped as normal with Speick and hot towel, then I made the mistake of trying to mug lather with the Horse brush. I won't be doing that again. I'm going to give the horse one more chance before moving on to my synthetics. So far, I've been underwhelmed. The Vie Long is a better bowl latherer than face latherer, I think... and perhaps better suited to creams, but that claim remains unsubstantiated.

I normally prefer bowl lathering, but I've been using my SOC to face lather every day for 3 weeks now. I am really starting to fall in love with this SOC.

Still working on my RazoRock xxx (I like the smell SWMBO is not thrilled with it - sigh) and it has finally gone from a lumpy moon scape to a bit more conical in shape. How long is "normal" for a tub of this stuff to last? It took me 40 shaves (plus some practice lathers) to go through my first EJ tub of cream. I just stated this wet shaving this June and went a bit crazy with the soap acquisition... While not actually joining any of the restraint threads I am under an austerity plan that will keep my acquisition disorder in check and work through the backlog of supplies. SWMBO having to sign for the delivery of box from Martin de Candre did not make her happy...

Anyone ever make it through an 8oz tin from HTGAM? How long did it take?

Also I see a lot if mention of g/shave and whether it's normal or not. Is there some sort of values you have found to be consistent? Like most average 2g/shave? I want to see how much I am using and compare since I am fairly new to make sure I am loading the right amount. Thanks.

In order to stop myself from wasting so much time trying to pick out my next soap when I already have plenty of good ones, I'm going to give 3017 another shot. This will either be "third time's the charm" or "the strikes, you're out" for me. I'm not going to buy (or shop for) another soap until the three partially used ones are gone. There's a puck of C&E Nomad that's been used 27 times before today, a small tin of PPF Cucumber, used 13 times, and a mixed bowl of about 1/3 of a La Toja stick and about 1/6 of a tub of PannaCrema Namaste.
My exceptions will be that I'll use my L'Occitane Cade shave stick for travel and I'll have a cheat day every ten days. My plan is to put aside a few dollars each week, and I'll have enough to restock when I'm done with the three soaps. We'll see how it goes...

Using the Chubby 2 to lather the Captain is like bludgeoning it with a blunt instrument. The lathers are great, but it's eating soap at a prodigious rate. Though it has not broken through yet, I can see the black bowl through the bottom of the soap. The end is nigh.

I'm calling the GFT Rose after tomorrow's shave. It is really hydrated and the lather quality is suffering a bit. I ws going to press it on top of that virgin AOS tallow Lemon puck, but I can't bring myself to do it. Looking forward to Monday's AOS shave!!!

Saying that now, how do you feel about the Captain?

Good idea, it works great:thumbup: I did that as part of my 3017 journey a while back and am glad I did. Surprisingly, the scents and performances of the different soaps don't all mush into one. You get characteristics and smells from different soaps during different stages of using the big mix.

I dig it man. I'll do that tomorrow when I get home from my NYC Vaca. Pasteurs is AMAZING. I'm very surprised how soft Simpsons current Best is.

I had to give up on the green tub of Proraso. The performance was great, better than the old version IMO. It's the smell. I don't know what it is but this last time using it really got to me and made me feel sick to my stomach. The scent is definitely different…it's almost like there's an underlying musty smell in there. Not sure what it is exactly, but I'm out! Life's too short, as they say.

Next up is some Cella that's been around for quite a while. I cut it from the brick and pressed it in to a big bowl. Seems relatively hard compared to what it used to be so hopefully it's still ok.

I've been enjoying the Razorock ABCBA this month. A little goes a long way with this soap and I think I am only about half way through the Ikea container's worth - half of the original brick. Nice lather, great face feel afterwards, and a nice Almond scent. - what's not to love?

Still chugging along through the XXX. I've got about thirty shaves out of it so far and I'd guess another 10-15 left. Probably closer to 15. This is a soap I'll dearly miss when done.

Still plugging away on the Stirling Spice. I did travel last week for 3 days and will travel this week for 3 days, so will miss just a little from this soap for about a week, but after that, no more travel so I should get right through the Spice. Stirling soaps seem to take a lather or 2 to "wake up" for me, but when they do, I have nothing but great face lathers.

I made it through a 4 oz tin of Pumpkin. It took about 3 months, the shaves were fantastic. For the most part I haven't keep track of grams per shave and exactly how many shaves I've gotten from a puck of soap, I just use and enjoy them. Don't read too much into grams per shave. There are so many variables involved in making lather that I don't worry about loading for xx seconds or xx minutes or xx grams or xx swirls on the puck. If you have hard water you need more soap than someone with soft water, if you are using a Chubby 3 you are going to need a lot more soap than someone using a Chubby 1, if you do four passes your are going need more soap than someone who is only doing one pass. Look through the lather tutorials and concentrate on making great lather.
