My Guess... 3017

I should add on that MWF lather that it didn't produce much either. Typically I get three good passes with more left in the brush but I had to squeeze the brush to get enough for the second pass. Loading more product isn't an option because it does not continue to load, it just gets more foam in the dish.

My word, gentlemen. Over 10,000 posts in this thread. If this were a book, it would be "War and Peace". Many thanks to all contributors for making this the best thread in shaving.

I never liked MWF. I had a sample of it and just didn't like the lather or resulting shaves. I can't recall what the lather looked like but I felt let down. Perhaps my water is too hard for it, perhaps that's how it's supposed to be but, in the end, it's not a soap I plan to buy.

"Got Shoes?"
Post #9993 in the 3017 Thread. :w00t:

So glad I found it as it's one of the most positive changes a method has made in my shaving routine.

I felt like the guy below when I first found the thread, but have been welcomed with open arms since I started.

Thanks to @johnniegold (Bob) and B&B for creating and keeping alive the greatest thread on B&B or the internet for that matter. :ouch1:

Oh my. 5 years, over 500 pages and over 10,000 posts. Who knew?

Ever since utilizing the 3017 method, I have come to apply the 3017 method towards other things as well.

I am currently 3017-ing my car. A 1997 BMW 740i with 168,000 miles on it. I will continue to use it until it is "all used up." (So far, it keeps going and going.... and I have learned how to be more "hands-on" regarding repairs to the car.)

I am currently 3017-ing a pair of saddle shoes by Johnston & Murphy that are 15 years old. I will continue to wear them until they are "all used up." (The patina just keeps getting better and better. With regular care and polishing these are no doubt one of my favorite pair of shoes.)

I am currently 3017-ing a pair of APC selvedge jeans that are several years old and will continue to wear them until they are "all used up." (The fades in the denim are really starting to develop some character and the jeans feel like a second skin. An occasional soak in the bathtub and drip dry and these jeans keep getting better and better.)

3017-ing things can be quite enjoyable. You notice the changes and the nuances in the item's character, its properties, its color, etc. You maintain it and care for it. And with the proper care and attention you are rewarded in ways you never thought of.

What else are you 3017-ing?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I'm still 3017-ing a puck of AoS Sandalwood soap.

Thanks, Bob, for starting this thread.
I am 3017ing my current marriage. My last one only made it to 17 years. I hope this one lasts longer (lol). We 3017 our cars and motorcycles, too.

Regarding how lather looks, you should rate lather on how it performs, not compare it to lather porn pics commonly seen on the internet.

I 3017'd a Benchmade Stryker 910. I carried it for about 10 years, daily carry. Used it to cut a few people out of a crashed car (seat belts were stuck). Finally, the lock was getting a bit worn, the blade was thinner from a decade of sharpenings, and I decided to retire it. Much to my dismay, and much like soaps, I learned that Benchmade discontinued that model. So I replaced it with a Benchmade Rift. Which was PIF'd to my son in the Army, who lost it. I bought another Rift and have it to this day.

Bob(johnniegold), are you still working on that original pictures worth of soaps that was in your first post on this thread? I'm curious for an update if you haven't finished that batch.

Sorry, just found the end on page 268. Your story is an inspiration for me to start 3017ing some stuff I have. I don't think I load as much as you, but I need to get rolling with it and stop buying stuff. I have around 90 soaps/creams now including dupes. Thankfully I've never had too much of RAD or BAD, only one brush and one razor after I figured out what I like and have been using that for the past 5 years. First 5 was a long handled merkur, and the last 5 has been the short handled one (34c?).

Mediocre lather from the MWF again today, but shave performance was decent. Still feel irritation but could be brush burn as I have to work the product a lot more on the face.

Best lather I could get was a little thin:

Loading more product isn't an option because it does not continue to load, it just gets more foam in the dish.

Probably a silly question, but have you tried soaking the puck while you prep?

After a 2 week paus from the Mike's this is how much there is left when i got back on the horse today. I joined a passaround a few months ago so i have been testing the products in the passaround for the last 2 weeks. But now i am back on track with Mike's orange. How many days do you guys think is left?

Well, I seem to be on a losing streak. First the RR/CC Bay Rum gave me irritation and finally a rash. Next, I tried TOBS Peperment. The first shave was ok, but the second shave lit my face up!!! My face was beet red all day yesterday. It was the worst reaction I have ever had to a product.
This has me worried. Will everything I try end in disaster?

Next up will be RR P160. The original P160 was the best product I have tried so far, so I'm hoping this will get me back on track.

10-12 I'd guess, but I've never really used Mike's.

I've gone through those streaks before...MdC, Harris to name a couple. Hope you get back on track soon. I had no issues with RR P.160 and really enjoyed 3017ing that one. It was very strongly cherry scented but gave me no irritation.

What else are you 3017-ing?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I'm still 3017-ing a puck of AoS Sandalwood soap. [emoji3]

I think we'll see some more 3017ing of AOS Sandalwood with the recent NOS pucks popping up at a vendor and his eBay store BIN.

As for other things I 3017....all my daily hygene products, toothpaste, hair products, soap, dental floss and my toothbrush seems to be going getting the same treatment and my wife swaps it for a new one when she sees how old it is.

My belt and wallet have gotten the 3017 treatment but I've started to look at the Popov wallets. My slippers (Cushies) are getting the same and I'll probably keep wearing them until they look like Barney Rubble shoes with the toes sticking out the front or they smell too bad to leave off my feet

While swapping out a few game systems and removing some electronics yesterday, I realize I have been 3017ing my 2 AV receivers for 15years or so. It's becoming more and more difficult to keep them running as they do NOT have HDMI inputs, still have PHONO (which I need) and VCR inputs and new products don't want to hook up to them without some tweaking.

As for soaps...my Cella hit day 5 today and I got the best lather and shave from it yet. I hope the weepers were the result of a blade that was too old or rushed morning technique. Today was smooth, irritation free, no issues. Same as yesterday, but even better.

I'm now a firm believer in the role of water hardness/quality in relation to quality of lather.

We just moved a few months ago and according to the specs given us by our new water dpt. our water is super soft. I've noticed shampoo and bath soap seeming extra bubbly - which makes it feel hard to rinse off BTW. Since we've moved I've been using products I'm unfamiliar with, however this week I've been using a Mystic Waters sample. I've always liked MW but have always had a transition time with it. But not this week! Its been epic! Just piles of shiny, slick creamy lather. It refuses to dissipate. I don't rinse my pucks. When I'd go back 24 hours later the protolather would still be a beautiful cream in the top of the sample just as I'd left it the morning before. This is not my prior experience with MW. Its taking on water like it didnt before. Its super easy to load and lather. Its not particular at all.

I now feel compelled to give MWF and Stirling a go. I've enjoyed them in the past but there's either been a transition to figure them out again or I'd have problems with consistency.

Its enough of a difference that if I move to a hard water area I'd consider a water softener.

Well, today went fantastic! No irritation at all. Thanks for the kind words Bruce.

I've had the exact same experience. Soft water rocks for lathering.

Is it difficult to install a water softener? I'd probably just use different soap.

I had a good shave today and think I realized that MWF just isn't supposed to look or feel creamy like other soaps. I decided to lather for 15 seconds like normal with MWF using the muhle brush and WSP rustic using the plisson. The MWF looked better than when I was trying to eyeball it and the wsp felt and looked creamy but seemed to dry out a bit.

Yeah that made it worse because instead of loading product it just made airy foam everywhere.

I can't recall if you bowl lather, but I collect the airy MWF proto lather (from loading) in my scuttle and then it transforms into a nice slick lather after agitation.

My Stirling sample is done! The remnants of soap weren't really enough for a shave but I made due with a pass and a half (i.e. only ATG on my neck). It is the first I measured the soap for. I used 1.99g/shave for a cost of $0.15/shave. I used nearly double what I estimate my B&M usage is, but at 50% the price (puck + jar to B&M jar) it works out to be the same.

Razorock XXX (s) 11/17/14 - 11/24/14
TOBS Avocado (s) 11/26/14
AOS Ocean Kelp (s) 11/28/14 - 12/1/14
EJ Sandalwood (s) 12/4/14 - 12/5/14
TOBS Eton College (s) 12/12/14 - 12/16/14
Stirling Autumn Glory (s) 12/18/14 - 1/14/15 1.99g/shave

I will be taking a break from 3017 now, because I want to do a bit of rotation before settling on my next target (if there is one). It's been eye opening doing this, that's for sure. Part of me wants to continue the 3017 just to measure what my usage is, but even going 15 shaves (about a month) of the same product started to wear me down.

Yeah that made it worse because instead of loading product it just made airy foam everywhere.

You could try soaking it over night with water. Should soften the puck up considerably.

Cinnamon, peppermint, and almond do tend to be the big three reaction offenders.

I was gonna say that the rustic looked a bit dry...then I went back and read your post, doh.
