My Guess... 3017

I'll be honest, I'm getting pretty bored with the Maca Root. It shaves well, but I probably have another 6-8 weeks of the same thing over and over again. I might take a break.

I calculate my shaves by start and end dates, which gives me number of days, plus or minus any additional lathers or skipped days.

Highest cost per shave were SCS Pumpkin, a soft and crumbly soap, and RazoRock XXX, another soft soap.

Lowest cost per shave were Palmolive shave stick and VDH Deluxe, both really cheap soaps.

One of the hardest soaps I've used, Pre de Provence, will probably last about 90 lathers at 150 grams, which is about 16 cents per shave. Tabac is around 13 cents per shave, but highly estimated.

Is your calculation of the soaps based on the weights on the containers or did you have a chance to pre-weight them before using? I find that some that say 125ml, only contain 90-100g of soap and some of the hard pucks that say 100g are actually 110g etc. It only changes things a few cents here or there, but does make a difference

FYI....my PdP numbers were/are pretty much exact as yours.

I don't have a scale so it's purely guesses based on their weights. To make it worse, I was guessing to see how much was remaining after being used, like Tabac.

Something I was thinking...if you made a really easy to lather soap that used up a lot of product per shave and then sold it in really big quantities, it might seem like a really attractive option. Kind of like MdC. I don't know what the typical usage is, but I'm guessing that people might underestimate how much they are loading because there's so much of it.

My experience with SCS, I burned through 85 grams in three weeks. If they sold a 200 gram soap for $20 that you could lather super easily and would last 2+ months, would that be more attractive to the customer?

Like MdC...if I used 1 gram per shave, it would be roughly 43 cents per shave. But I'd bet I used closer to 2 grams per shave, which would be 86 cents per shave. SCS looks like a bargain compared to that.

Had another great shave today with Arko Velva. Probably about a week left, but I'm in no real hurry. I decided to face lather for a change today and enjoyed it. As with the previous 2 sticks I used (Valobra and Speick), I find that I can easily switch between face lathering and bowl lathering, switch between brushes, lather methods, and razors with no real change in performance. It's a pleasure to use these soaps that are so easy to lather.

On another note, something that I found interesting: When doing the tables for Jim's spin-off thread, I realized that my total average soap use for the last ten soaps is 2.0 grams per day. Which is pretty consistent with the first 9 soaps that I gave the 3017 treatment to. In my first round of 3017, I used 2.1 grams per day. So, if nothing else, it looks like I've figured out how much soap I need to load for good lather.

Thoroughly enjoying my November choice of soap: Mitchell's. The ideal brush for the job? The small but mighty Plisson synthetic. By far the best performer in the MWF lather category. Super thick, rich, creamy, slick lather with ease. The Fat is my favorite scented soap out there. So clean and simple <3

My mini-3017 is going fine. Thanks for letting me pretend to be part of the club even though these are tiny samples. When I get to my Stirling and B&M samples in December it will be more 'legit' because I will have a measurable amount and will take a few weeks for each. My last B&M sample gave me 14 shaves which is 4 weeks of shaves at my schedule.

Should I be listing dates that I shave, or show no interruption? See how below I have a gap because I only shave every other day:

RazoRock XXX (s) 11/17 - 11/24
TOBS Avocado (s) 11/26 - 11/26

Thought about straying from the Maca Root cream, but didn't. Ended up "breaking through" the bottom of the jar. Now, there's still a ton of product left on the sides, but I wouldn't be surprised if the cream doesn't last until 2015. I might be using a bit too much product as I've been lazy and dipped my giant brushes into the super soft cream, as opposed to a harder cream or soft soap.

Maca root is a fantastic cream IMO. Back when I did not follow the 3017 approach I would use it whenever I used aggressive razors. It is one of the most slick creams I have used.

I still have plenty left. But it'll be a long time before I give it the 3017 treatment.

Just finished a tub of tabac soap. Wasn't planning to 3017 it but I moved recently and ended up just using it exclusively. Great soap and the scent doesn't bother me at all. Cleaned out the tub and shoved a puck of MWF in there so I guess that's up next. :thumbup1:

Week 4 of Strop Shoppe Bay Rum. What an awesome soap! I was pointed to the perfect aftershave for it in another thread here on B&B -- Crown Shaving tonic. I'd never heard of it before, but it was recommended as a good match and it really is a great combo. If you're a fan of the scent of the strop shoppe bay rum (or mystic water which is similar to the SS but is a bit different) that's one you need to check out. It doesn't look to be quite at its halfway point but it's pretty close. We all know the 2nd half goes faster as the soap is hydrated so I think about Christmas is a good call for how long it'll last (it was started November 1).

I bowl lathered for the first time in a long time today. I got my Dottie bowl out and whipped up a mountain of lather with my Savile Row 3824. Still prefer face lathering but it's fun to switch it up. I've asked Mrs. Claus for a G20 scuttle for Christmas this year so hopefully I'll be playing around with bowl lathering more in the new year.

So far I'm really enjoying my first Strop Shoppe 3017. That's good because I have like 6 more scents in the cupboard I need to work through. I think they're particularly good for my skin type. My complexion is as good as it's been in years.

You're not pretending, you're living the dream! I will sometimes use some other products in the middle of using up another, and I just list the dates from when I started a soap until I finished it. For my SCS New Spice, I broke in some brushes with a variety of products over a few weeks in the middle, and listed my finish date of the New Spice as if there were no interruption.

I had to demote the Wilkinson blue bowl to shower duty. Mediocre shaves. Not the slickest soap. I almost feel like I failed, not using it to "the bottom of the bowl", but on the other hand, I have no desire to be a shaving martyr, either. I think the desire to enjoy my shaves won out.
I pressed a sample of Mikes Bay Rum into the bottom a shaving mug. Much nicer shave today. :)
I have a bunch of samples I will be 3017ing, in no particular order: Mikes Lime, Mugso Original, Spiced Citrus, Orange Amber, B&M Leviathan, Maggards London Barbershop and Limes and Bergamot, Strop Shoppe Black Tie and Date Night, and LASS Spring Street. I think these samples will take me into 2015, then I will resume my full sized 3017ing.

Week 4 of purple haze. The last few days I have been working over my TOBS Lavender cream with a SOG boar. Just dunking that big boar right into the cream and loading it like I hate it. Broke thru to the bottom this morning, the SOG is really doing some damage. I'm thinking 4 or 5 shaves left at most.
