    Default Taking the plunge

I have never shaved with a straight, and frankly it scares the crap out of me. But after reading all the posts and watching Lynn's DVD I spent some money with Tony Miller.

I talked to Tony and after his recomendation picked up a bench strop and two razors. Got the basic one he sells and the stainless steel model. Can't wait till they get here. Hopefully will try the first shave this Saturday.

    Jim,
Good choice going with Mr Miller. You'll start out with a shave ready razor. Please remember to take it easy. No pressure on the blade. Don't feel you have to do it all in one day. If you only feel comfortable doing the easy parts ( cheeks, neck, whatever ) then just do them. As you get a better feel for the razor and your technique improves, you'll progress. Preparation is vital, too. Wet beard, lots of lather. Some guys practice technique with a butter knife for a while - might give you something to do while you count the hours until you get your razor. I'm sure others here will offer good advice too.
    Regards,
    Zig

    Jim -
Welcome to the world of straight razor shaving. You have a big advantage in watching Lynn's DVD.
I started out with a razor and not knowing sharp from a butter knife. Hand was shaking a bit... wasn't sure how to handle the blade on different parts of my face... used too much pressure... did not get angle low enough... did not know how to prep my face...
Best advise I got was to shave what you feel comfortable with at first and work your way into it. But then, you may be a natural!

    Good shaving,
    Steve

Jim...resitance is futile..you will be assimilated.

Enjoy your shaves, persist with it, no question is stupid so ask as you go along. I would add deliberate strokes with very little pressure. Don't flop the blade around like a wet lettuce leaf, a sure sign of trepidation.
