Default Texas Tech hires Tommy Tuberville

to replace the fired Mike Leach. I know there are some SEC fans on the site Is Tuberville a defense or offense minded coach? He has noted that the most noticeable changes to the system will be tweaks to the defense and that they will still air the ball out. Does that sound like the Auburn program during his tenure?

I think it's an excellent move on Tech's part. I was pulling for Ruffin McNeil but I'm happy they hired Tuberville.

I've wondered what the word was down in Austin on this move. I know the signing/announcement was over the weekend, but I haven't heard nearly as much buzz on the local sports radio talk shows about the hiring as was coverage for the firing. I think every body who ever drove through Lubbock called in to opine on the latter.

I hope it works out very well for TT!

Tuberville is a defensive minded coach. I could be wrong, but this really doesn't look like a good fit. I'm surprised he didn't hold out for the Texas A and M job, though that may be his long term goal.

I was pulling for Ruffin McNeil too. I think that would have been a great move.

Texas A&M is not going to be opening any time soon, I don't think. They were left in a bad spot before Sherman got there. He's got deep A&M roots, and I expect that he'll be given a bit of time to turn that program around.

Sherman has deep roots in College Station for sure, but a lot of alumni wanted Tuberville instead of MS. Since they pulled out a bowl game (but lost), Sherman has a little more breathing room...for now. Congrats to TT but their alumni will be expecting fireworks on the field! I also hope a little order comes very soon in Lubbock.

If he's smart, he'll leave the offensive staff in place and let them do their thing and worry about the defense...

A lot of A&M Alum think they have a destination job kind of program... They don'

I agree with both points. Unless A&M has consistent success and dominates Big 12 teams (and not just UT), it will continue to be a stepping stone program. I personally think Sherman has the profile to get A&M the attention it needs, but of course he needs to win big and now. Assuming he isn't looking to his next destination.

The biggest hurdle for Tommy may be implamenting the 3-4 at Tech. It may take a couple of years to get the LBs in to run that scheme well.

He's a really good coach, though and a stand-up guy, by all accounts.

Well, aside from the fact that I am of the opinion that Leach was underhandedly removed, I too was pulling for Ruff.

So, I recognize that Leach was more expensive. I also think that Leach is more than just a little insane. Still, there is no excuse for not doing the right thing. (that last comment can be applied in almost every direction of this mess)

I won't speculate, but I'm curious to see how things change.

Perhaps things were reported completely differently in Lubbock than here in the Metroplex, but in what world do some of the Texas Tech fans live in (specifically those who called into the local sports talk radio programs)? In the world where most of us live, when your employer tells you to do <insert mandate here> or else (assuming it is not illegal) and you say I'll take the or else and you wind up sitting on the curb with your bags packed. You don't look around surprised and start crying about it. You move on, hopefully happy in the choice you made. Unless this is not what transpired, then I am happy as I can be that the University stood up to him and helped him out the door. He was bound to destruct sooner or later and probably take a good program with him. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with where Leach initially brought the program, but he is not bigger than the program and I think he apparently thought so.

I hope Tuberville takes the programs and continues to improve on it.
