New to B&B with Before and After Restoration Pics of first Gillette DE

Hello, B&B'ers. I have been trolling the forums for a while, and finally feel I have something to contribute. I received the best gift at Christmas this year. I was sent my grandfathers DE razors. My Moms Dad 84 (still alive,) and my Dads Dad (90 passed.) With no serial numbers on these razors, I'm having a hard time with the specific dates they may have purchased them, and am hoping someone might be able to help with that.

I wanted to show the process I used to clean and restore them. I have documented them in pictures in 3 Stages. Stage 1 was the condition I received them in. Stage 2 was the inital cleaning, and Stage 3 was the polishing phase.

I have ordered a sampler pack of razors that I am so excited to start using. I think more than anything though, the thought that I am shaving with my grandfathers razors is pretty darn cool. :thumbup1:

Enjoy the pics, and I welcome any comments. Thanks for looking.

Welcome Jeremy. Good work on cleaning up those razors.

These particular razors have date codes on the underside of the base plate which consists of a single letter and a single number. The razor with the fat handle and numbered adjuster knob at the top of the handle is known as a "Fat Boy" and has the date code "G2" which means the razor was made in the second quarter of 1961.

The razor with the slimmer handle is a super speed. From your pics I can only make out the year code "J" which means it was made in 1964.

Go to the Wiki and you'll find a chart with all of Gillette's date codes

All I can say is WOW!!

My hat is off to you Sir! You did a great job bring those great old razors back to life, and every time you use them you will be carrying on a family tradition passed from generation to generation, and honoring your ancestors in the process!

I envy the journey you are embarking upon...

And BTW, Welcome aboard from one newbie to another.. There is some truly nice folks here!
