    Default Penhaligon's Opus 1870

Yesterday I took a break from the Trumper's samples I'm working through and tried the Penhaligon's Opus 1870 from the set of minis I bought from their winter sale.

I loved this as it went on - got an initial burst of black pepper and some cedar notes. Within an hour it had dried down to a floral - albeit not very sweet and much more appealing to me than most florals. Was disappointed in that many of the reviews I'd read indicated that this was for cedar lovers - wish I was getting more cedar through the dry down. I liked it quite a bit despite that but I need to try it again and perhaps apply a bit heavier next time.

I liked Opus for the same reasons, but I think Tumulte Pour Homme might still be the heavyweight champ of cedar scents for guys.

If anyone disagrees, shout out--I'm always looking for good woods.

Tried this again today with the same results. Applied very heavy - it starts out with some pepper and cedar. The cedar faded quickly and it dried down to a nice floral. The cedar never comes back for me. I like this as is but would like it more with more cedar throughout. Strange that my skin just seems to devour the cedar.

I picked up some Penhaligon's sample and was very impressed with the Opus 1870.

My go to frag. For me the it starts out with the sharper citrus notes, musk, cedar, then dries down to a really balanced and refined blend of rose and cedar.

I start out with T+H Rose cream, then use the 1870 balm, then musk up with EdT.

My favorite! Though it is more musk to me on the lingering aroma.

I really want to like this fragrance. I love the cedar that comes off my skin immediately followed by pepper. It then dries down to a nice spicy rose but the cedar never reappears from that first blast. I put it on very heavy yesterday and even reapplied it at lunchtime with the same results. But there's something haunting about this fragrance that won't let me let it go. So I just bought an 8ml decant in hopes that it will show better applied from an atomizer rather than from a sample vial.

I'll have to give this one another try. Your description makes it sound really nice, but I don't remember anything outstanding about it. In fact, I think I remember somebody describing the smell as the cedar shavings of a well soiled hamster cage, which is about what I remember. I'll have to give it another try. The first time I tried Blenheim, I hated it. The next time I tried it and all subsequent times, I have really enjoyed it. Who knows, maybe Opus will be similar. Be sure to update when you get a chance to try it with an atomizer.

If this had a little less black peppercorn, I'd nab it. The long-lasting Yuzu/neroli upper end and the herbal/musk/wood base (somewhat similar to FIERCE) are both excellent.

If you didn't like it the first time, you probably won't like it the second time, either. This is no Blenheim Bouquet, IMO. I know a lot of guys love this scent, but I don't like it at all. Of all the Penhaligon's scents, this one is the worst to my nose.

It smells good to me, and drives the wife crazy (in a good way). Sounds like a winner!

Their description sums it up perfectly for me:

Opus 1870 is earthly warmth and cashmere comfort, the log fire of our fragrances, something you want to be next to, warmed by, strangely drawn to and captured by.

    I love this stuff.

Has a permanent position on my rotation of colognes during winter.

I shelled out for a bottle recently after having sampled it; one of my favorite winter scents.
