Baking Soda

I read about using baking soda from a web site called Instructables.

My wife suggested I try it...

The idea is to use hot water and soap of some sort and wash your face well.
Then mix a paste of baking soda and hot water and put in all over you beard area.

Let is sit for a minute or so then rinse face with clean water.

Then shave with only hot water...

I have tried it several times to avoid the canned aerosol shaving stuff.
I shaved with the cheapo disposable razors I have and it does soften the beard and cuts easily.

I am not sure I will try this once I have a straight...:wink2:

I'd rather spend my time with a good soap or cream and a brush than mess around with baking soda, but if it works for ya...

Hmmmm....

Let me think...

The smell of hot baking soda or Taylor of Old Bond Street Lavender.

I'll get back to you.

Thanks for the tip. Maybe it would work as a prep before a good soap or cream.

Well, you can......
But the taste is pretty nasty.

Actually VDH doesn't taste all that bad. . .

Hey if it works use it.

Think I'd rather try Grandpa's brand Baking Soda soap instead of making a mess with the boxed powder.

Just thinking, why?
I am sticking with my creams and soaps and brushes - I really do enjoy this ritual every day.

In some other threads I've read that one of the "tricks" of beard prep is that alkalines attack the outer layer of the hair and allow water to get into the hair. Since baking soda is alkaline it makes sense that this would be an effective beard prep. But I think I'll stick with shaving soap.

This might be a great solution from a purely utilitarian standpoint. I'm wondering how it would work following this with something like Old Post Road #4... I bet the results would be pretty great

Well When I tried it when we had nothing else other than some horrible Guatemala imported soap that left my skin very dry.

I am looking forward to some very nice shaving soaps in the future.

Time to pamper that ol' face of mine.

Can not over state the obvious...
