Default EJ DE89L question for the gurus

I was considering buying another Merkur HD and someone on the forum said I will be much happier with the DE89L. A few questions::

    1) He said: Make sure you get the newer Muhle/Pinsel head though. How do I go about making sure I get this?

    2) Is there an open comb version? My Merkur HD was open comb, but I really don't know if it makes a difference as it's just what mine was.

    3) Where is the best place to purchase?

    Thanks!

The Edwin Jagger DE89L has the same head as the Muhle-Pinsel. I'm not sure there is an open comb version of the Edwin Jagger, but there is an open comb version of Muhle R89 which is the R41. You can see them at bestgroomingtools.com. Lots of online stores carry them.

If you are in the US, might want to try qedusa.com, they seem to have a nice selection and very fair prices.

I believe there was an earlier model of the Muhle razor that was was the problem. I don't think the current Muhle R89 or R41, like the ones offered by West Coast Shaving, will give you a problem. The R89 is regular comb the R41 is open comb.

I had a R89 which I just gave to my nephew as a learner. I liked it, but I find an open comb to be much better at taking out my tough, coarse hair. The Deluxe Bull Mastiff with New Open Comb head from Bob's Razors I just bought, is far superior to any of the closed combs I have tried. I have not had the opportunity to try the Muhle R41 but were I to buy a Muhle I would definitely lean that way.

I have been using a jagger DE87L for about two weeks and if i may say this is the best razor i have used. I also have a merkur38C barber pole that i used for about 5 months to me at least the jagger beats it like a drum...
Just an out and out smooth razor no matter which blade i am using. Like the above poster said you can find it online at quite a few online sites.

I found Bob's Razors online.. Which head does it use? The same as the R41? With just different handles that he makes?

Bob is a vendor here (he goes by cooncatbob). He uses re-plated vintage Gillette heads on his razors. Either a Tech, Old, or New style head. The handles are sold sans head, so you can customize them with whatever head you like best.

    What's the difference between Jagger's DE89L and DE87L? I have a DE89L and I can't imagine a better closed comb head.

I love that razor but if you want one you better hurry since it is not on Mühle's own website anymore; so production probably ended...

This is the DE87 (faux ivory) as opposed to the DE89L (lined chrome). The DE86 is black and the DE89 is unlined chrome.

I'm afraid I don't own any of them (and will have to offload some razors before I'm allowed to purchase any more).
The heads are identical on theses 4 razors and seem to be highly thought of. If any member owns more than one of these I'd be grateful for their opinion as to the relative merits of each razor.

I suspect it is down to simple aesthetics (ie which one you like the look of) ...but I might be wrong.

I think I read somewhere that the faux ebony and ivory handles razors are hollow and as such, slightly lighter than the two chromed handle options.

All I know is that the EJ89 shaves like magic and killed my RAD, until I switched to a straight anyway.

My first DE. I love it's heft.

I've been wet shaving with cartridges and finally got fed up with the cost when buying a 5 blader replacement. I couldn't even shave my upper lip with the 5 blader. The cartridge is taller than my lip.

The Jagger is amazing. I started out slow and am amazed at the shave I can get in two or three passes. Even a M3 took two or three passes and never came this close unless I went ATG.

I'm thrilled at the money I'll be saving and the fact that I got the last razor I'll ever have to buy for the rest of my life.

I bought a sampler pack of blades. Three weeks in and I'll have months of sampling before settling on a few brands.

This Jagger is on my list for Christmas presents this year. I'll have a brother, father, uncle, and father in law that will have the same joy in shaving I'm experiencing now.

I bought the DE87 Ivory six months ago and all my other razors have been languishing on the shelf ever since. My Futur has been out once or twice but that's about it. I can see me selling the others soon.
