Photography Resources

APUG is great and the people that frequent it are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I have found The Luminous Landscape to be very informative and especially helpful (for me) relative to questions regarding digital printing.

Be warned.....

I find Ken's information to be extremely useful, but you do have to take it for what it is, examples, he does not feel that a tripod is needed with modern VR lenses, and he believes that if you want to shoot video, you are best off doing it with your iPhone rather than a DSLR.

Having said that, I have found the mere mention of Ken's name on some forums... even automotive forums... can really bring the "haters" out of the woodwork.
There is no shortage of Ken-bashing if you pull up a Google search, and I don't feel that it is totally deserved. Some of the vitriol is nothing short of what would compare to what you might hear from a scorned woman. I don't understand it.

So, perhaps Ken's information should be referred to and digested, but not credited when repeated. Not unlike that girl from Jr. High that you really liked, but didn't want any of your friends to see you with.

^^ so true...

Also, I find his taste in final images to be overly saturated and really high key light levels. Nothing wrong with that, just tends to make things look fake. His take on tripods is interesting, I remember shaking my head when I read he hand holds shots down to 1/15. Not everything needs to be shot at 12000iso. Also his simple 1990's style website is an utter bore to spend any amount of time on. Just plain ol ugly.

But, I enjoy www.rangefinderforum.com quite a bit. Mostly for rangefinder cameras (duh!) but plenty of other useful info for other cameras. Centered more around gear-head types, but also a section called "coffee with mentors" where people like Roger Hicks, Bill Pierce and such have their own sub-forums which cover all sorts of interesting topical discussions.

Btw, David Hobby has completely changed strobist.com, format, content, etc is revammping. L101 has been updated too.

Disclaimer #1: I am in no way affiliated with any of these websites.
Disclaimer #2: I in no way claim to be a good photographer - I enjoy what I do and that's all that counts. So should it be for you as well.

My go to resources:
1. http://www.PentaxForums.com - because I use Pentax gear.
2. http://www.TheCameraStore.com - Canadian supplier with a major store in Calgary, AB. Their prices are usually pretty good.
3. http://www.Airliners.net - my interests are aviation and aviation photography. I visit this site to see examples and try and improve, but mostly I just feel like throwing my gear in the lake and taking up basket weaving.
4. http://www.Photozone.de - I visit this site to get overall impressions and suggestions when looking for new lenses.
5. http://www.colormanagementinfo.com - because I think I'm so sophisticated I incorporate color management in my photo editing setup.
6. http://www.digital-photography-school.com - just an all-round informative site with some handy and helpful tips.
7. http://www.dpreview.com - if you can sift through all the egos, sniping, whining, bashing, complaining, trolling, and so on, then this site may have some useful information for you. The staff themselves are heavily biased though, so watch out. A few tremendously good photographers post nuggets of information there that are worth your weight in gold, but you have to search them out.
8. http://www.kellysereda.com/bokeh - because he's a great photographer and inspires in certain ways.
9. http://www.digitalbirdphotography.com/contents.html - because one day I want to take brilliant bird photos and this website will teach me how.
10. http://www.photo.net - a more mature forum where photography is all important, not gear and so on.
11. http://www.steves-digicams.com - a good equipment review site with some good discussions in the fora.

When editing I use Topaz Labs Detail to remove some lens blur, and when going for maximum detail extraction from a RAW file I use Raw Therapee.

I put some of my pictures up on Flickr, and as time passes [I think] they get better and more interesting. I also experiment now and again.

My Flickr photos are here http://www.flickr.com/photos/bossies/

Have fun all! It's a great way to spend time.
