What's new

Anyone watched the $20 video from SRD?

I am taking a week off of work next week, and plan to use some of that time entering the world of straight shaving. If I have any time left over, I'll spend it with the family.

I would like to look at some straight razor tutorials before putting blade to skin. Has anyone watched the straight razor video that SRD sells? It seems a bit expensive at $20, but if it's a great tutorial, I think the money would be worth it. I'd like to hear from someone who's actually watched it before breaking out the credit card, though.

Anyone have any reviews?

Are you aware of any other good resource videos available? Everything I've read indicates that while there are a couple of youtube videos on straight razor shaving, there isn't anything that comes close to a Mantic style video. I have done a youtube search, and I've been under whelmed by what I've found. Maybe there's a video on there that I just didn't find.

FWIW, Mantic is supposedly in the process of doing some videos for straights - not sure of his deadline tho. I haven't seen the SRD DVD, so like you am curious about what it's like.

if you re talking about the shaving vids, I do not think its worth it.
You can easily find a ton of shaving vids on youtube.
Frankly I do not see whats the big deal with straight shaving, its the same as DE , light touch constant angle, stretching, good beard prep. Angles get figured out in just a few shaves.

I have the video. It is good on many levels. If you're just looking for vids on shaving look at Jockey's on Youtube. For stropping SRD links some great stropping vids to YouTube via their site. Links tab, maybe?

Mantic picked up a filly and Gold Dollar from Ruprazor in order to learn how to use a straight so he could do a straight video for an anniversary video. He also jsut got a shave at T&H in Vegas and recorded that.

Who knew twitter can be usefully for more than figuring out where your buddies are drinking

Not sure what thread it was in, but someone recently posted the link to a video of some guy shaving, goatee & all, with a straight in about 3 minutes. Amazing to watch. Wish I could remember the link.

That's a pretty "famous" clip around here. That guy actually registered here and posted twice too.

Thanks for posting that clip again. It's amazing to watch. I'm afraid that at my age with my slight hand tremor, I'd be on the way to the hospital before that blade even came close to my face. Tempting, but I'm gonna stick with DE.

+1 on that recommendation.

I have it and it definately does hold value to hear a veteran straight shaver talk about something he has been doing for a very long time. It is probably in need of some updating now that we have newer technology, and Lynn has had some time to get to know what information newbies are after. In my opinion, still worth $20.

Jockeys vids are awesome - I have referred back to them on a number of occasions. I think if you wanted to get started immediately, just watch these and see how you go.

I was sent an extra copy by accident from SRD but am in Australia. If you want it, its yours if you want to pay shipping (just PM me).

Thanks -- that is a very generous offer. We have so many members in Australia that I'm going to pass on the very nice offer, so that a Southern Hemisphere B&Ber can benefit from your generosity. You guys down under usually get the short end of the stick when it comes to shipping, so I'd hate to have something travel out of Australia that's already there. :001_smile

There are soooooo many videos online that you don't really need it. Not only shaving but how to hone, what hones are, stropping and advanced shaving strokes and much more.

It's fascinating to watch, but not straight shaving as she is done in these parts. Watch it for kicks, but don't let yourself be put off by his bravura and idiosyncratic style. Should you try the straight, rest assured that you'll be encouraged to try it in a much slower, more relaxed pace. :001_smile

Lynn's DVD doesn't just cover shaving, but honing, stropping, and restoring. And the chapter where he goes over some of his collection (aka the razor porn chapter) is pretty sweet. It's well worth getting IMO.
