Default Thoughts on a pipe tobacco pass-around

Well, a few gents mentioned some interest in doing something of this nature, so I thought we could use this thread to bang around some ideas of how to do something fun. Here are a few thoughts I had for options:

    1. Find a half dozen gents or so who were willing to participate and who had tins of interesting tobacco they were willing to share, then pass them around round-robin fashion until each gets back to the original owner. We could log the reviews in a thread and get each person's take

    2. All pitch in a few $ and purchase a few interesting tins, then dole them out to everyone.

    3. Other ideas?

I kind of like #1 since it is the least work, but chime in if you are interested and if you have any thoughts on how to do this so everyone enjoys this. We may get into too many conflicts based on what type of tobacco people enjoy, but talkin' never hurt anyone.

Option #1 sounds good to me. The only thing I would not want to see in a box pass would be Flavored tabaccos. I am more a fan of english style blends, but I am open to other goodies.

Hmmm...I like this idea, but I am mucho curious and tin-poor. I would be willing to contribute some $ or get a few more tins, though, but I am interested, and would like to see what kind of enthusiasm this generates.

I would like to participate but I have only a few 1/2 empty tins- so option 2 sounds better from a practical standpoint for me- that being the case I would be happy to handle the purchase split and ship of anything that the "club" decides to try, based on shipping I would think getting 2-3 bulk tins and splitting them -x-ways would be the way to go. I am also partial to the English style blends - Whatever way it goes I'm in.

I think it was 6 men so far-

I'll be away for a little over a week, but when I return I have a few items to contribute. I'll just catch up with the "tobacco train" in whatever form it takes.

I would vote for number 2...only because I don't have much to offer as far as interesting tins. I enjoy English Blends so if that is the direction we head then it is fine by me.

    I'm all for #1

Straight Virginias or Latakia blends only. No aromatics!! That way, nobody will forever soil their pipes.

Good input. I agree we keep it to Virginia's and English blends.

Also, no Gawith and Hoggarth tobacco!!

(sort of a "pipe guy" joke - but also in the interest of not sullying anyone's pipe)

Count me in. I agree that a well blended tobacco doesn't need anything on top. I'm good with whichever everyone decides to do.

I am defently in and I also perfer english blends. Va's bite me too much. This could be a monthly thing or even biweekly. We all chip in and someone picks a baccy, we buy enought tins or bulk for everyone to try and we giv our opinions. Box passes are great if you have a lot of people and start off with a large box, but in smaller groups i think #2 would be better.

    Default great idea....

Either option is fine, although I prefer option 2 if pushed. No aromatics!

I don't smoke, but found myself reading this. Why don't you guys consider a "decant club" for tobacco?

I like the idea of a round-robin better than a box pass, this way everyone always has something, instead of waiting for the box to come around. Also, having a smoke is not always a daily affair like shaving, so it may be some time before people have a chance to enjoy a smoke.

If most people are of the "buy a bunch and split them up" school we can do it that way, I suppose. Or people can commit to each providing (pre-existing or purchased) tins and pass them around round-robin style.

If we do round robin do we list what we have and see who wants it?

    #1 for me as well.
    No aromatics.
....and I like the idea of creating a master list everyone can choose from.

    Question A Proposal

    OK, how about this:

We decide on an "opt-in date", let's say the beginning of February

Everyone needs a tin for the pass-around. This can be either (a) one you have already (that fits the criteria below), or (b) something you have purchased and have in hand before the opt-in date. We'll list the tins and their original owners publicly in this thread. To help people who don't have anything and aren't sure what to get, in this thread the more experienced folks toss out some suggestions. We'll have to keep an eye on who is buying what so we don't have repeats. The assumption is that people have things in their hot little hands by the opt-in date.

I will assemble the list of participants and a list order. Everyone ships their tin to the next person in line. Much enjoyment is had by all, and we maintain another thread with reviews and commentary of the tobaccos.

After some period of time, we rotate, sending things on to the next person in the rotation. This continues until the tins are back home again.

Thoughts? Suggestions? I am not mandating anything - just trying to get something going.

Criteria for tobaccos: No casing - English blends, Virginias, VaPers, etc.

Sounds like a good idea. Since I don't have much as far as stock, I may wait and with the help of some of the more knowledgable purchase something that will fill the gap here.
