Dress shirts

Gents,
I am looking to purchase some dress shirts. I have a lot of Banana Republic shirts, but I am looking for something better, more refined, sophisticated.
I like: Windsor spread collar, double button cuff, double turnabck front placket, back side pleat.

I am confused as to what kind of cotton? Sea Island, broadcloth, egyptian cotton, etc. - some one explain this to me, which is the best value and durable?

Anyone order from Paul frederick? I know few have got charles tyrwhitt shirts.

charles tyrwhitt. great shirts. brooks brothers as well. bespoke never hurt anyone either.

I second Charles Tyrwhitt shirts, lots of different fabrics and styles with the ability to choose between a double button barrel cuff or french cuffs.

just don't get non iron.

Why? I've had great success with their non-iron dress shirts.

I wear the paul frederick shirts and I am very happy with them. I tend to order french cuff from them though. As long as you don't get to funky with the patterns I don't see how you can go wrong.

Haven't tried them yet but Charles Tyrwhitt is worth a look. Harvie and Hudson another Jermyn Street shirt maker servicing U.S.

Both have shirts that sound right up your alley.

I believe others in here have some experience with one or both and may weigh in.

Thanks gents, now as far as fabric, anyone prefer poplin vs sea island, etc?

Tyrwhitt has Classic collar and cutaway collar. Paul Frederick has Windosor Spread collar, which is what I want. So I wonder if the classic or cutaway is similar to that?

Poplin is good, crisp fabric, and fairly lightweight (not too much though) so good even in summer. The Sea Island at CT is similar weight, but a smoother, silkier fabric ... and IMHO worth the extra coin.

Lol, I love that phrase. Even though I think my Traveler's shirts from JosBank are pretty darn good for the $.

I would seriously consider a custom shirt. They're a lot less than you would think. You should check in your city for people that make them. I'm lucky, I've got Moda Georgio in mine. Online purchases are also an option. www.propercloth.com and others. Can't remember any of the others, but Proper is in America and I really like their website. You can spend hours just browsing through their cloth selection. Its like....cloth porn....Did I just say that... :\

+1.

Any city of a couple million souls will have a decent shirtmaker or three. Certainly worth checking out ... the ability to be there as measurements are taken, and details are worked out, is second to none.

Yes, but they seem kind of expensive at $135 a shirt.

You can get one for $100. Do more shopping on the internet if you want something less expensive.

But to put it in perspective, a regular shirt from BB is $80. To tailor it to fit you perfectly is at least another $20. Plus your limited on color and cloth selection. Your also going to get a double pleat in the center of the back because the shirt is made to fit the majority of people. A custom shirt can be made to fit the yoke perfectly with no pleats. A much cleaner look. Not to mention the limited collar selection, button choices, forced to have a left pocket, etc.

$135 sounds pretty damn cheap to me.

Here. $50 starting for a custom shirt from Hong Kong. http://www.bestcustomshirt.com/Shirting-Fabrics.asp?Pr=1

Definitely. Just pulled the trigger on a blue stripe twill this morning. $7.95 shipping and they usually ship from New York, NOT London. Can't be beat.

Now you've enabled another way for me to spend too many hours on the Internet at night rather than in bed. Thanks alot, Leighton.

That site is awesome - already made some great looking shirts. Now to convince the wife they are a work expense...
