My Dad smokes a pipe, and I love the comfort the smell of it brings. I know there are tobacco colognes and aftershaves out there, but the ones I have found are really high end (e.g., Vera Wang) -- the tobacco is cheap, are there any aftershaves that would satisfy a more moderate budget?

Alt-Innsbruck sounds like something you'd like though it's more of the "leaf" smell rather than a pouch tobacco smell.

I must recommend the Tabac aftershave splash and cologne from Portland General Store. The scent of both is a great mix of toboacco, citrus and lavender, and the aftershave splash especially is great value for the money-The cologne reminds me of high-end pipe tobacco, especially in the opening-

Also, it may be worth noting that the "Tabac" made by the Portland General Store is not the same as the famous German Tabac by Mäurer & Wirtz, commonly referred to by members here, which is available in a whole range of grooming products. They're two totally different scents and product ranges.

At least they're fairly affordable products. If you get hooked on Santa Maria Novella, Penhaligon's and Creed products, then you've got some real worries.

Does anyone know which of the aforementioned products contain only essential oils versus fragrance oils? I HATE cheap fragrance oils and chemicals in colognes (which are unhealthy, toboot). In fact, I recently spent some $ trying another brand's famous cologne and as soon as I opened it and got a whiff, I was sadly disappointed by the "fake" scent. While yes, I make colognes, I'm always looking for masculine/unisex scents by other artisans that are all natural.

Well ... yes. There are niche perfumers who specialize in using only natural botanicals. The thing is, it can get expensive. Nevertheless, here are some you can check out:

Aftelier Perfumes. Mandy Aftelier, the perfumer, has a discontinued scent called "Blond Tabac." I have no idea why she discontinued it -- the stuff's amazing. It's not on her site but I think she has some left. It's certainly worth a phone call for a sample.

Profumo.it. This is the site of Dominique Dubrana, a French perfumer living & working in Italy. There's tons of stuff to look at on his site but the "Scents of the Soul" collection is a good place to start. A number of his scents have tobacco as a prominent note. I can recommend the Mecca Balsalm in particular. Tobacco, rose, incense ... truly beautiful stuff.

Soivohle Perfumes - Liz Zorn is another niche perfumer working with both natural & synthetic elements. The link is to her "Naturals" collection. It's not a tobacco scent per se, but so far I can highly recommend her "Underworld" scent. Vetiver, jasmine, rose ... amazing. There's also "Tobacco & Tulle" (which is nowhere near as feminine as it sounds -- don't let the marketing fool you!) and "Sinti" (a tobacco/rose frag).

These are good places to start. The list is seemingly endless -- I've been going nuts buying samples lately. But it's fun.

Hi there,

I'm guessing the pipe tobacco fragrance you're looking for is an aromatic of some kind, rather than a straight tobacco with no flavorings or toppings added. You want something that smells nice....right?

No idea what after shaves smell that way, but I do know of a couple frags I can mention. One is very expensive and one isn't too pricey.

The deepest aromatic fragrance I've sniffed has been 'Tobacco/Vanille' by Tom Ford. Really excellent stuff and it easily lasts all day when applied. Heh, that's the very expensive stuff.

The other one I'll mention would be that Cavendish Black extrait that Colleen makes. Mark provided the link above, and that's the one I'd suggest you maybe try. It's got a very pleasant aromatic theme going on and is an accurate example of what that tobacco type smells like when smoked. I believe it runs about $30 for a one ounce bottle. The shaving soap she makes has the exact same scent, and I use that for a nice change of pace.

+1 I also quite liked this scent and surprisingly it did remind me of the pipe tobacco my grandfather used to smoke. Be sure to grab a bottle and/or hoard your bottles as I've heard the distribution on this one is being limited.

Another thought-I have been wearing Hermes Equipage as my everyday scent lately, and it reminds me of pipe tobacco as well-Actually I read that the guy who developed it was trying to capture the scent of cold pipe tobacco! I think the original Equipage might have had stronger tobacco notes but I definitely get the pipe tobacco vibe from the current formulation-
