I'm a liberal arts major who happens to have more interest in science than writing. This semester I decided to take a course in astronomy and it's one of the most fascinating subjects I've encountered. That the universe is so large just blows my mind. When you think that there are exponentially more stars in our galaxy alone than there are people on Earth... Wow!

Be very glad that that picture did NOT put things into perspective. ;-)

Also worth mentioning (though not quite as graphic): xkcd's universe on a log scale.

I always thought Earth was the third planet from the sun...
Or is that a representation of the planets sizewise?

Yes it's just about comparing size. And we are the third rock from the sun(which was a cool show by the way).

    Because:

-We haven't found an easy way to litter in space.

-Mining landfills hasn't become financially lucrative yet.

-Your progeny (and loved ones' progeny) are going to have to live in the world you leave behind.
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. - Robert A. Heinlein

Should be. Several cities (including Charleston, SC) are built on top of piles of trash.

Gary is like a ghost town. You can tell it was once THE PLACE, but that day passed a long time ago. The old buildings still stand (at least they did 10 years ago when I was in that area), roamed and occupied by small armies called gangs.

Sadly, I'm well acquainted with the phenomenon.

Yeah, your area is going the same way. Going through Gary is like being in an end of the world disaster movie.

I know police officers that were sent up there for a special enforcement campaign. They came back with one very strong impression. Even some of the most basic laws were completely foreign to the residents of Gary. Quite literally, people were shocked and could not understand why the needed a driver's license, for example.
