    Default truefitt hill

    all i can say is

been trying the ultimate comfort sample since tuesday. had to re-do my technique because i'm used to soaps and this is a cream. today it kinda hit me. this stuff goes on like crisco. nice and smooth and slick. the blade ends up all over my face. this is the best stuff since me.

one question though, for those of you who use truefitt hill ultimate comfort, is there another cream that is as good? one that goes on like crisco...smooth and slick. truefitt hill is rather expensive.

    OR

could a jar/tub of truefitt hill last me quite awhile provided i don't overload the brush? currently i use vdh. one puck which is about 2.5oz lasts about a month. the sample i had was 5ml. it lasted about 3 days.

amazon has a 5.8oz tub for $30 and i'm tempted to buy it i just wanna know taht it's gonna last a while. OR is there a equally good substitute?

I have not used it, but I'm using Trumper cream, which is also amazing quality. I get 3-7 uses from 1ml of Trumper, so I'm wonder why a whole 5 ml only lasts you 3 days. (I'm a 3 month newbie to creams so I may be way off).

As much as I love Trumper, I find that there is nothing like Nancy Boy cream. If you haven't tried that, you really need to. It's cheaper and simply amazing.

+1 on the Nancy Boy. Men who are more knowledgeable than I often speak of "new generation" shaving creams that lather easily and are quite slick, and they mention T&H Ultimate Comfort, Nancy Boy, and The Gentleman's Refinery. Of those three, Nancy Boy is the least expensive and has a wonderful scent.

T&H Ultimate Comfort will last a long time if you lather it properly.

Other comparable creams would be the Trumper's line. They, too, are expensive.

I have never tried Nancy Boy, so I can't comment on it.

I find the AoS creams to be slightly cheaper and also of high quality.

The 5.8oz tub of T&H lasted me 11 months, and I was somewhat reckless with my usage. If I were careful about the amount of cream I used each time, It could have lasted a year or so.

The 1ml samples last me about 3-5 shaves (It appears that you are over applying cream to get only 3 shaves from 5ml - I'd likely get 20+ from 5ml). T&H, AoS, and Nancy Boy (and Proraso) all require much less cream to get a good 3 passes.

    So, if 1ml gets me 3 shaves = 170ml (the 5.8oz) x 3 = 510 shaves

300 shaves a year 5-6 times a week, nets about 1.7 years per tub.

Wow, I am being heavy handed with my creams! I usually get a year or so!

i think i may have overdone it with t&h. i'd always used vdh soap. since it was my first time, i was expecting a fluffy whipped cream consistency instead of smeared crisco.

ive not tried UC (though ive tried other T&H creams) and they last ages. You dont need much product on the brush to enter shaving heaven

oh... you did it wrong. Way wrong!

I use the size of a big pea (smaller than an almond). My brush is wet (but not dripping) and the bowl is dry. I start whipping it around, but the brush is not "mashing" it. The hairs are mostly straight. If I need water I use a drop or two.

I whip it up for about 30 seconds. During that time I get to smell the wonderful flavors of whatever I'm using. I think get plenty of meringue-ish lather, not too wet and not too dry, but definitely NOT crisco. I think you're using way too much, and not whipping it enough.

Good for you for dumping the VDH!! hehehehe Good quality stuff is not that expensive (try the BST) and lasts a long, long time. And it makes the whole experience so much better.

i do face lathering. the one time i tried it in the bowl, i didn't get much of anything. one of the tutorials or videos said use an almond size. that's what i was using. tomorrow, i aim for one pea. now that i think about it, that wouldn't be bad. if my one pea is too small, i can always add more. water amount i don't think is a problem. but i'll keep all that in mind tomorrow morning.
    thanks.

One of the best creams at any price, but that just happens to also be one of the lowest priced, is the C.O.Bigelow/Proraso cream. And it's readily available at your local Bath & Body Works. It's $10 for a 5 oz tube, and is on sale right now, buy two get one free. $20 for 15 ozs of one of the best shaving creams on the planet!

Personally, I find T&H UC to be a truly unique cream - there isn't another one out there quite like it, in terms of texture, function and scent.* However, if you're looking for a less expensive cream that is at least in the same ballpark, Nancy Boy is probably it. I don't find the NB lathers as well, smells as good (in either scent), or is as slick as the T&H UC, but it does provide a good amount of cushion and skin conditioning. Another possible option is TOBS lavender cream; I don't like it as well, either, but it's still a good cream, with a subtle, essential-oil based scent; it is even less expensive than the NB.

*Some people think The Gentlemens Refinery cream is quite similar to T&H UC, but I don't agree. I find T&H UC lathers better and provides more cushion, although TGR is still a very good cream. Either way, it's a moot point per the OP's query, as it is actually more expensive per unit than the T&H.

Congrats on finding, and having success with, T&H UC. I love T&H creams. You may also want to try the Grafton and the West Indian Limes cream from them also, as those are both wonderful creams too. You can also visit their website and order a sample pak of their creams and AS balms for $16.00. I would suggest that, as that will provide you with the opportunity to experiment with each and see which ones you like best.

I am not sure what I was doing wrong. But, my tub of T&H grafton lasted me 5months, and that was inter spaced with shaving with Proraso. I really don't see how a tub could last a year. i was conservative too. I barely put the brush tips in the tub and give a tiny twist. I feel that this wastes less cream then putting in an almond amount or whatever. Yet mine has not lasted a year. I maybe could get 6 months from a tub.

This is a subjective perspective. Face lathering generally results in a denser lather than that achieved with bowl lathering, and some people like that, myself included. Using your appraoch - which I have many times - I am not happy with the results. I'm not looking for Crisco, but I definitely want something denser than what could be achieved with a pea-sized amount of cream in a lathering bowl. And I don't think that's "way wrong."

You're turning out to be my favorite curmudgeon.

BTW, I do get your point, and especially when I use Nancy Boy. But using 5ml in 3 days seems really wrong. Even if I use a "ton" of my Trumpers sampler, that's still just .5 ml.

    Am I missing something?

I don't have a reference point for what 5ml looks like, or 0.5ml. What is the standard size of the samples T&H sells? The last time I had any T&H samples, they were still putting them in the mini screw-top pots, like Trumper still is, rather than the cardboard "envelopes" like they are now. My current Trumper samples are labeled as 1 gram each, so that's no help. I can say, though, that I could easily get through one of those Trumper samples in short order using almond-sized dollops. Three days doesn't sound outrageous to me.

I've seen much talk about T&H Grafton in this thread, so I'm throwing in.
I love it. I truly adore Grafton SC.

Truefitt & Hill Rose - ahhhhh - better than sex!!

To make it really special, buy a good quality Rosewater at an east indian grocery store (they usually have excellent quality stuff - some Rosewater in your regular markets/stores can be pretty sh*tty) and use it for making the cream in place of regular water. It is to die for!!! (Unless you don't like Rose. Some don't, and I just don't understand that!)

I agree with an earlier comment that a tub should last close to a year if you use the right amount - that thar pea size works perfectly.

T&H is simply the best I have ever personally used. I keep trying to find another that will replace it, but I have not yet succeeded.

The only T&H cream I've used is, 1805. Worked great, smelled great, and broke my face out bad. The best cream I've used is, JM Fraser's. Super slick, easy to lather, smooth, protective and smells good too. There's not a better value out there either - $13.50 for a huge 450ml tub.
