Well I had a VDH boar brush from the local big box store and it never lathered like I wanted it to, so I took the knot out and threw in a HUGE golden nib 22mm fan shaped Super badger. I'm thinking I could have set it probably 5-10mm lower in the handle but hey on the bright side I now have a large luxurious brush to play with! 
This is after a shampoo and 1 test lather. B&B essential for comparison which has been used many times. Last picture includes a small Vulfix brush (which is actually great!). My only question to you would be, what is a little smaller, scrubbier knot from TGN? Or would I be better off getting the smallest diameter and setting it lower? I'm going to be talking to my grandpa about helping me make a couple/few handles because he has a drill press, lathe, etc.
