  1. Default Drying a blade makes it last 6 months???

Seen a Clark Howard show the other day and according to him drying a blade will make it last 6 months. Has anyone ever tried this? Did a search for it on his site if anyone is interested Drying your razor blades extends shelf life on clarkhoward.com. Don't know if I believe this or not.

Sorry but at less then $.20 a piece for blades bought in bulk I have no desire to milk extra shaves from a blade.

I call BS on this one.

Even if what he says is true, he's just wiping it on a towel so there is still going to be water on the other side of the blade.

+1 No way. That's like some of the claims of putting razor blades inside of plastic pyramids.

  6. Default I like this quote...

"He revealed that blades don't degrade from shaving, but rather they corrode from the moisture that collects on them once you're done shaving."

I think they degrade from hacking away at stubble. I remember reading that human hair is as hard as copper wire of the same diameter. I don't know if that's true, but I know that mowing down stubble will certainly dull a blade.

Exactly. If keeping and edge sharp is as simple as drying it off, I feel sorry for all those suckers who shelled out big bucks for hones and strops!

There's also a warning on almost every single blade, "Do not wipe".
If you find yourself in a fair fight your tactics are questionable.

    Simply playing Devil's advocate here, with no stake in this horse race;

    1. If you made and sold blades, and wiping them made them last longer, wouldn't you put that on the blade too?

    2. In a land where people sue McDonalds because they burn their lap when they spill McD's coffee on it, dumb warning labels abound.

FWIW - I never take the word off the bat of anyone selling a product. Follow the money, and it'll lead you to the truth.

This is the reason for DO NOT WIPE warnings. It is not the drying so much as the finger-slicing that they are worried about.

This is a very interesting thread...I have never heard of, nor would I consider...drying an $.18 blade in hopes of getting 1 more shave! I'm pretty sure more often than not I WOULD cut myself!!

Well, from my personal experience, I have found that simply not using a blade will prevent it's becoming dull for quite a long time. So long, in fact, that I have many blades that are 20+ years old and just as sharp as the day they were made.

    YMMV

I ride a motor scooter most of the time. I get between 80-115 miles to the gallon when I do. On those rare days that I drive my old beater of a car, I get 8 miles to the gallon, YMMV, mine sure does.

I just added my thoughts to his page. I usually love Clark Howard's advice, but I have to just assume he doesn't know about shaving the "right" way here.

From my own experience I can tell you thoroughly rinsing and drying a multi-blade razor will extend the effective life somewhat.
6 months is a ridiculous claim.
Maybe instead of 4 or 5 shaves, I would get 6 or 7.

I've never bothered to try it with a DE

+1. Best case, you can double the lifespan of a DE blade, ie from 4 to 7 or 8 shaves, but that's hardly what he's claiming. Frankly, anyone using a blade that old has just reduced their standards to the point where they don't notice the poor quality shave.

That is so they aren't responsible when some idiot cuts one of their fingers off while in the act of wiping a blade.

Me too - three shaves from a Derby or red pack personna, 4 from a Gillettte Yellow / Shark / Astra Super Platinum
