    Default Need a Honemeister

Hello gents. I recently acquired a 1/4 grind Wapi from a fellow B&Ber. Now while this Wapi is in decent shape and is shave ready and shaves well enough for now, I've noticed that the bevel is not even and need the workmanship of a honemeister who can put things back in order so that I can properly maintain this blade.

Also, I wasn't sure whether I would like the stainless steel scales on the wapi due to the weight, and sure enough, after trying the Wapi I do not. Can anyone suggest a honemeister that can both reset the bevel and resharpen the blade, as well as exchange out the scales? Thanks in advance.

Edit: If this is just a cosmetic issue, I can live with that, but I need the opinion of some of you honemeisters to discern what the case may be. That aside, I'd still like to get it rescaled.

It sounds like a cosmetic issue that may or may not be correctable by honing. Width of bevel actually has more to do with the grind, not the honing. Now, if the bevel is asymmetrical, then its a problem. But by asymmetrical, I mean the edge looks more like a scissors/chisel/plane/Japanese edge/etc. That is a honing issue.

One side of the bevel being wider is possibly due to that side not having been hollowed out as much as the other.

Your looking for a restorer not just a Honemeister and there are quite a few of us listed here in the restoration section on B&B... send out some pm's and get some quotes...

Here are a couple of photos to illustrate what I'm talking about.

Another picture of one spot that has an uneven edge:

The uneven edge is something to worry about, but most of my thicker grind razors have some variance in bevel width. For the sake of knowing for sure that the razor is ready to shave with, you should send it out. Just don't be surprised if it comes back with a slightly wavy bevel line....especially on a wapi. Both of mine have some degree of that. I just checked. The slightest inconsistency in grind can change the thickness of the bevel, but if the edge is in good order, that's what you need to be concerned about.

I'm sure some of the more experienced honesters will chime in too, please defer to their guidance. I still consider myself new at this.

Exactly. No way to tell from pictures alone. Still could be uneven grind from the manufacturer or poor hone job. OR both.

    .

Its really hard to tell because the damndest thing is that it feels smoother than my very sharp hollow ground Dovo. I just want to make sure that edge is perfectly flat so the little devil doesn't eat my face when I least expect it.

Good point on the hard to tell by pictures.. I think I'll go ahead and try sending it out to someone who both hones and restores razors. Since I live near Houston, I'm going to give Ken Rup a shout first since he does both AND lives nearby in San Antonio to boot.

Edit: Got in touch with Sapito and he's gonna give restoring it a go and also swapping the stainless scales for some sexy ebony ones.
