  1. Default First Safety Razor

Just purchased a "Merkur Long Handled Hefty Barber Pole" last night.

Just wondering what everyone here thinks of that as a first purchase.

I have an HD, not the long-handled version, but it is great shaver and as long as the longer handle is comfortable in your hand, you should be very happy with the performance. Congratulations, and welcome to B&B!

Great shaver for sure!! Just be REAL careful with the pressure...let the heft of the razor do all the work!!!

What's the best type of blade to use in this razor?

I've heard a lot about Derby.

I started with a Derby in my HD and had good results. Then I moved to 7'oclock yellows and now I'm on Blue Bird. Enjoyed the 7 o clock more than Derby and Blue Bird even more but Derby is a good baseline to start I think.

I think you're going to be a happy camper.
I also recommend you start with Derby, very comfortable shaves.

    Good luck!!

Welcome as well. started with Derby's and a HD as well. Have moved on to IP's, crystals, and 7 O'clocks. I found them to be much more comfortable for me, YMMV. Derby's are a great blade to start with. I still shave often with my HD

Good razor! If you can find a razor blade sample pack, that would be great!

+1, best way to start out. Derbys and Crystals are amongst the most forgiving of modest technique, but once you get your chops down you'll likely move to sharper blades (Feather, 7 O'clock, Bluebird) for the smoother shaves.

Congrats on the new razor. :) I personally like the red box Personna blades, but the Derby's are fine blades.

I have gotten some really great shaves from my Merkur HD w/ astra or crystal after working hard on my technique.
