How important is shampoo/conditioner for short hair?

I recently had my hair cut shorter, and I've been wondering:

  • is it worth spending extra cash on mid-high end shampoos if your hair is short?
  • is it even worth using a conditioner at all on short hair? After all, it's not likely to get tangled...
By short, I mean 1/4 inch on sides and maybe 1 inch on top.

Thoughts welcomed!

I keep my hair at a 1/2 guard for the most part but I still have to shampoo the area and condition my scalp because if not I flake up like crazy. Maybe switching to a body/hair wash like Bronner's could cut down on the need for mutiple products.

You will want the benefits of the shampoo/conditioner for the life of your hair. Even short it will end up not looking well and just not feeling how you want it to either. It is always a good idea to keep it well hydrated with shampoo and conditioner.

I have hair the length of a military style cut.
I use the same bath soap on my hair as I do anywhere else, with absolutely no ill effect. Have been doing it for more years than I care to remember.
Save your dough and buy some shaving soap instead.
