I am still new at this. Im not using the standard grip on a straight instead i hold the blade behind the heel w/ my thumb and index finger. Is this hindering the shavability of a straight?

It's really hard to tell what you mean. Where's the heel anyway? I need a pic to see what you're saying.
But, to answer your question...there's not right way really to hold a straight. You hold it how it feels most comfortable for you. If it doesn't feel right, it's probably not.

Have a look at the link below and which grip is the closest?

I'm pretty new to straights, but I find it difficult to get in close everywhere using just one grip. Been trying to find new ways to hold the razor to get it in at the angle I want in a way that feels natural. I've always felt a DE was little wide for some areas, straights are that much more... uhm... clumsy in that way.

I use several different grips for different bits of my face on different passes. If its stable, and you can control the angle then its the right grip
Same here, I use slightly different grips for different parts of my face and different pass angles. If it's comfortable for you and you're getting a good shave, you should be ok.
