Welcome to B&B. The VDH is actually a very good soap (good lubrication and easy to build a lather). I think it is excellent, considering the price.

There is noting cheap about the Merkur razor, so you have all the equipment for a good start.

Probably the biggest difference with using a DE is that you have to avoid any extra pressure on the blade and the need to control the blade angle vs basically letting the blade lay flat on your face.

Look for the videos and follow the instructions and you will be fine.
