I'm used to shaving in the shower with a DE...reading the worst advise thread, this is listed as a bad idea. Is there a specific reason for this?

yep - you want to avoid getting water between the razor and the scales because it will rust. I would also try to avoid holding it with slippery hands while im standing there naked.
It's all fun and games till somebody loses a wiener.
This is the reason, explained in a nutshell.
Just think about the first piece of real estate a falling razor will hit if it slips off of your face.......

the things you don't think of from the safety of DE land.
str8 shaving is more adventurous than I thought it would be.
As said before...you are not shaving with a gadget now!

Now that's the reason to grow one for yourself 
I think that the risk of dropping it goes up exponentially when you consider you're covered in water, and then you're going to be adding soap to the mix, especially when you consider what would happen if you dropped it.
That, and it's not good for the razor. Not a lot of guys here want to admit it, but every once in a long while, you're going to wet the pivot; shower shaving ensures that once in a long while will be every time you shave.
