Default Gillette Gel Or Pinaud Clubman?

My dad ventured out today to CVS drug store, and I so went along just because I could. Guess what....they had pinaud clubman on the shelf an 8oz bottle for $6.49 plus tax. I snatched up a bottle. This is my first purchase of this product. I knew nothing about it until this website. When I got back to the house I washed my hands with unscented Dial and let them air dry. I took my Gillette gel that I had already and the clubman and smelled both from the container. Hands down smelling them from the bottle the Gillette gel wins by a mile. I sniffed the clubman and thought "what did I just buy?" " am certainly going to smell like an old man, and please do not light a match because the bathroom will explode."
I then applied the Gillette gel to the back on my left hand and rubbed it in. Then I did the same on the back of my right hand with the clubman. I let them both dry. It was the same thing....hands down the Gillette gel......could not hold a candle to the clubman!! Wow the clubman smells wonderful. If the clubman smells like that after a shave then I am sold. I keep sniffing the back of my right hand. Now that I asked myself "what the heck had I done buying that old man aftershave?" I know now why I bought it, because it is fantastic. I understand now why it is a classic and why people on this forum like it so much. I am very happy with it.
Now I realize this is a first reaction to it, so we will see what I think of it after a few days. Will my wife like it? I will find out in a few days when I finally get back home.

I have not yet used the Clubman, but have used the Gillette Gel. It's a little synthetic smelling, but is a great product for the value.

If I didn't already have a huge stock of Aftershaves, I would be buying a bottle of the Clubman Bay Rum.

I love Clubman. Prior to DE wetshaving, I didn't use scents of any kind. I generally dislike them, but now, having tried a few, Clubman is my one and only. I get it at Sally's Beauty Supply for about half the cost of CVS/Walgreens.

Sally's huh? Great, I have one of those near where I live. I never thought to look in there for some reason. Thanks for the tip.

The green Clubman gel is good as it has a light hold. I hate the yellow "extra hold" gel.

I dare you to try with another Pinaud product - Lilac Vegetal. And I dare say that if you give it the same test you'll wind up liking it.

You have proved what women have known about perfumes for many, many years. That they change when applied to skin.

I might be hooked. I went for a walk tonight and took a shower afterwards but did not shave. I being a newbie want to limit a shave to once a day. LOL However I did apply the clubman just so I could smell it. Is that bad? Am I becoming obsessed with my new "hobby"? Do I need to get help? :) All joking aside, I like the clubman. I wonder if my wife will like it?

I don't wear cologne, so my aftershaves substitute for that function even on days that I do not shave.

Default Takes getting used to ...

My wife and I were both put off by the "old man" aspect at first. I might have dropped it entirely, but I was getting redness and pimples on the neck which the clubman was helping to reduce, so I used it for the sake of the skin, despite the smell. It grew on us, and now the wife and I love it. I've found other aftershaves we also like, but I keep coming back to the Clubman.

By the way, I dose myself in the evening as well, and on days that I don't shave. I like the smell, yes, but it's mostly an excellent skin tonic (for my skin type, anyway), and keeps my inevitable redness and irritation (still working on technique) in check.

Clubman is a favorite of mine. Haven't tried the Gillette yet.

OK I have an update now on my Gillette gel VS Clubman. My wife can to pick me up from my dad's house (I am back home now), so I decided to shower and shave before she got there so she could try out my new wet shaven face and the Clubman. Her reply was this "how much of it do you have left and how much did you pay for it?" She does not like it saying that it smells like musk and something her grandfather would wear.
Now a day later I placed Gillette gel on the back of my left hand and clubman on the back of my right hand and let them dry. I asked my mother and wife to pick the one they liked best. Both of them said the Gillette gel is much better and the Clubman is gross.
I have a new question gentlemen, now what? I have a new bottle of Clubman that they do not like. My wife loves a scent that is no longer made called Safari by Ralh Lorine. I have shave soap and balm from Krissy in the Spring Rain scent and my wife likes it ok but it does not make her go crazy like Safari does. Do you have any advice, ideas, or suggestions? :)

Ahh the good old Clubman, I was lucky enough that my first barber I went to used Clubman aftershave as well as Musgo Real!

I have seen the Safari shave soap on the bay as well as a few internet sites lately. I seem to remember a few threads on it as well.

    Good luck in finding it!

Hey, I found the older posts in the soap forum, enjoy!

I'm so sorry she doesn't like the Clubman! That stuff rocks, and I wear it alot. I can't see where she is picking up any smell of musk though. Did you buy the classic Clubman? Next get some aqua velva. Another classic that I love.

I really like the smell of the Aqua Velva Ice Blue, it's a classic scent, that is quite pleasant.

If you have a Family Dollar nearby, they sell their own brands of the classic Old Spice, and Brut aftershaves. Both are quite well respected around here, and the Old Spice Clone has a huge obsessed following.

Yes to both questions, but we all suffer the same affliction, so you are in good company.

Buy yourself the aftershave you want, and her emerald earrings or some other precious jewel. Or if she truly hates it, diamonds.

I guess I'm fortunate, my wife doesn't really care about my products. She thinks the whole thing's goofy. Of course, she likes some more than others, but I've never gotten the veto.

i picked up a bottle of the pinaud clubman at cvs after seeing this thread

the good news - i love the scent and so does my wife

    ding ding ding!

the bad news - after using it for a few days, i believe i may be allergic or sensitive to some ingredient - blotches and itching

it's either the clubman or tallow soap (which are both new additions)

going back to other products for a bit - then i'll add one at a time to see what's causing the problem

    sad either way

I do have a Clubman update. I used it today as I knew my wife would not be home for several hours. I could enjoy the scent and when she got home it might have become weaker and be less "in your face" so to speak. Today she said it was better and to keep using it now and then and maybe it will grow on her. That is a good thing folks, I enjoy its scent. Keep your fingers crossed. :) Now if I can just find (and afford) the Ralph Lorine Safari shaving products I will be set. That scent is her cat nip.
