Default An Oldy but a Goody

Picked up a half rack of Rolling Rock yesterday. It has been about a hundred years since I drank this stuff. It was the dedicated "Coors Substitute" back in the day when Coors was not available East of the Mississippi. Now that I've had my share of Coors, I kinda think RR might just be better than Coors. Is it just me or is it really difficult to find Coors Leaded (i.e. NOT Coors Light, old light brown can, banquet beer)?

It's been quite a while since I was a regular beer drinker, but Rolling Rock was my favorite for sure. Nothing like a summer day, watching an Orioles game, eating Ritz crackers with blue cheese, sippin' on a Rock.

I don't think Coors is even close RR! You should try some Dos Equis next, the one in the green bottle.

I like RR, too, but is seemed said to have such a long time family owned brewery takenover by Anheuser-Busch

Always been a favorite of mine. A way underrated domestic IMO. Here's a IOTN pic of mine from a couple of years ago.

I concur. This is my favorite summer beer. Nothing better than a canoe trip with a cooler full Rocks. As an aside, did anyone else notice a slightly "sweeter" taste when Anheuser Busch began brewing Rolling Rock?

I used to be a fan, but I gave up on Rolling Rock when Bud bought them and moved them out of Latrobe. I just can't drink Rolling Rock brewed in Jersey. Now they're brewing Iron City in Latrobe. That's a little strange too--like the Mets playing at Yankee Stadium. But I can get over that.

Rolling Rock has a very similar taste to XX Lager (Cervecería Cuauhtémoc-Moctezuma brand). It’s a fine beer !!

My memories of and thoughts concerning Rolling Rock are diverse and many faceted. When I was undergrad, there was a convenience store that carried the RR pony bottles (7 oz) in cases of 24 for just over $2 as I recall, which was amazing even at the time. We were pretty good customers. But part of the deal was it never tasted the same way twice and a few times it was so skunked as to be virtually undrinkable. But sometimes it was excellent. Not a whole lot of quality control going on there.

Then when I first moved to Montgomery Co, Md. the local county run liquor store carred RR in returnable pony bottles, which just seemed too cool, although returnable bottes seem to pile up. By that time though the beer was consistently excellent.

Shortly thereafter the seemed to be a big push out of Latrobe to try to be a national beer and it was widely available, for some reason now in the regular 12 oz, but long neck bottle.

But is was not too long until RR sold out to A-B, which moved it our ot Latrobe, etc. Preety gosh darn weird for a beer whose slogan on every bottle was (this is the original version(: "A little nip from the glass lined tanks of Old Latrobe. We tender this package as a premium beer for your delight and economical use. It comes from the mountain springs to you” And now A-B is advertising RR as "small town beer" whatever the heck that means. I had not thiought of Newark as a small town. My bad, I guess. I guess A-B figures that the average consumer jsut likes the sound of the words "from the mountain springs" and will not care whether there are realy any such spring involved!

Smacking yourself in the face with a meat tenderizer is better than Coors (especially light) so that isn't saying much.

I used to drink this a lot a few years ago when I was a regular in an 'American bar' in Rotterdam, NL. It's decent for drinking straight from the bottle in a bar but in all honesty, it ain't special.
