Big Green Egg, Weber or otherwise

Hi guys,

I am looking into getting a grill over here in the UK. I have had no feedback off the 3 emails I sent to the UK importer of the egg, and I was wondering the opinion of anyone who has had any none US experience of buying a decent smoker.

US guys please feel free to chime in and suggest the sort of bbq I should get to start me out!

I have an egg, but if what you want is primarily to barbecue/hot smoke meats and the egg is difficult to find, I'd look into a Weber Smoky Mountain. They're much cheaper and probably easily found. Everyone I know of that's had one liked them really well.

If you want a more versatile, do-many-things grill, the standard Weber kettle is the classic.

Egg's are excellent at many types of cooking, but kind of cultish

I'm after something to go long and slow on, I have a couple ways to quick grill, but I want to get into the world of slow pork butts and meltingly soft brisket

You might want to contact BGE headquarters in Atlanta.

There is an active dealer in Holland and with the European Union, perhaps it is not a big deal to get one from there.

Here is a link to their WEB page:

The Weber Smokey Mountain is the way to go. There is a website just for the WSM at virtualweberbullet.com. Lots of good tips and recipies.

Is smoking popular outside the US?

I've got a WSM and absolutely love it. Never used a BGE.

Edit: I want to get one of the larger WSMs but I'll have to wait until I make enough bank to justify dropping that kind of cash on something I don't "need."

You could always build an UDS or Ugly Drum Smoker for about 50 bucks.
They work well. Just google UDS or ugly drum smoker.

There is a company called ProQ in your neck of the woods that makes a Weber smoker clone. http://www.probbq.co.uk/ Its not bad and in a few areas exceed the Weber.
