grandpa's DE razor

Got his razor in the mail today and took a few "as-is" pictures. Lots of soap scum to be removed...lots. I'll work on cleaning it up a bit this weekend but wanted to post some pictures. Can anyone confirm the model? After scraping off some goo I'll check for possible date codes and such and post anything I find. Any info is appreciated!

Functionally it works great and it closes nice and tight. Looks to be in great condition (nothing bent, no dents or big scratches). Probably light scratching, a little rust and maybe some brassing, but we'll see once she's cleaned up a bit. It's not a show piece, but it's worth the world to me.

And yes, it's value to you as your Grandpas razor is much more than the rarest Gillette out there........

Yep, you'll never find a treasure like that in any store...and I bet it cleans up pretty well, too!

Clean it up and pop in a fresh blade.

(start with the setting a little low if I were you, and open the doors before you change the dial setting)

Yeah I can't wait to clean it up and give it a try. I think some scrubbing bubbles and a toothbrush should work pretty well. I work at a medical device company and we have a machine shop so it's a great resource...especially since we work with stainless every day. (Having an autoclave aint bad either). If there's any rust left on there a dip in the passivation tank will make quick work out of it and rust-proof it for future use. A little instrument milk for smooth operation and she should be good to go. I'll be sure to post some post-cleaning pictures.

That, and a douse in Barbercide will be all that is needed to restore this razor to perfect operating condition.

I was editing my post to say that we have an autoclave as well (or 3). Does the barbercide do anything else besides sterilization?

I think an Autoclave is WAY overkill.
It ain't no scalpel, afterall. The barbicide or alcohol is all the disinfecting you need, and is certain to be less dangerous to your family heirloom.
High temps and razors DO NOT MIX.

Nope, it's just a chemical concoction that kills nearly everything (I could be exaggerating a bit, but it's potent stuff).

Barbercide is available from any Salon supply store by the way (check your local yellow pages for the nearest Sally Beauty).

Certainly nothing wrong with Barbicide, but as taught to me by another Member here... Scrubbing Bubbles contains the very same anti pathogen, so doing both is redundant (though still fine!). The Scrubbing Bubbles also contains some harsher stuff I think, so you don't want to soak it in that for a long time (I saw a post where someone accidentally stripped the finish off their razors by doing this).

BTW, these of course are not stainless steel. Not that you said that, but your reference to working with it made me wonder, because I don't know what the passivation tank is or will do to it. The razor is nickel plated brass. Hate to see you damage a family memento. Besides, there will be no rust probably, and any you do find should go away with the Scrubbing Bubbles and tooth brush.

I asked my mom about her dad's razors (he used Gillette DEs until he started taking lung cancer treatments). She said she had know idea what became of them, an knowing her brother he threw them away.

As others have mentioned, spray some Scrubbing Bubbles on that puppy and scrub it with an old toothbrush for about 2-3 minutes, then rub some rubbing alcohol on it and then soak it in some barbicide for about 12 minutes, rinse it off and you're all set.
