Default What would you get if you were me?

Ok, here is what I want to do. I have a 2 yr old son. I wanted to get him a "birth" razor and have the top engraved. I'm I correct in thinking that Merkur is really the only company still making quality razors. Does anyone know if they are date coded or is whats out know going to be roughly 2 years old? Any thoughts on the model (I've never used a Merkur)?

Also I've read some threads about engraving and I think I've confused myself. Is there anything I should worry about? If so, should I even do it?

    Thanks for the input

I do not think that engraving a Merkur would be possible. They are made of a low quality metal that degrades if the chrome plated surface of the razor is cut away.

It appears that one can engrave Mühle heads:

Laser engraving isn't very deep, so it shouldn't break through the chrome plating.
