Mandom!

Found a local Japanese grocery store that carries Mandom aftershave!
Actually, it's Lucido, but it's the same company!

Seraphim, I know you had/have Lucido, how does it smell?

Lucido is very nice--I think that it's one of the best Japanese aftershaves in production. It's supposed to be scentless, but you can get a whiff of menthol when you splash it on. Very cooling and moisturizing.

The bad news is that it doesn't smell anything like Mandom aftershave. Of course, this could also be good news.

I mentioned this in another thread but I just picked up Mandom and Bravas at a Japanese supermarket as well. Aside from the smell, which I do enjoy, the other thing I like about Mandom is the design of the bottle. It's glass and a real handful like it was made for the massive paws of the Brawny paper towels lumberjack guy.

The peculiar prose written on the bottle is humorous---something like "The world loves a Mandom man. The world loves Mandom. Man o man there's nothing like a Mandom man." Love it. Very classy.

The screw on top is also very interesting. It is made of thick weighty plastic with crenelations on the top. Why you ask? So you can use it as an impact device of course. This is Mandom after all. They might as well write "after shave lotion and improvised weapon" right on the bottle.

Congratulations on your score! Finding Mandom is not as easy as it seems. I looked around for it for a long time in Tokyo before I came across some dusty stockpiles. It's easy to get Mandom hair tonic and even AS balm, but the after shave itself is very elusive. I hope that this doesn't mean that it's going out of production. It really is one of a kind.

Bravas is pretty cool too. In fact, of the two, it probably is the better aftershave. I've also heard that you can buy it in litre bottles, which would be amazing to have.

Have you had a chance to use them yet?

Yes I have. The scents are peculiar in that with all my American aftershaves I can always detect similarities to some other aftershave---whereas with Mandom and Bravas the scents are very unusual and hard to define. Of course my nose isn't trained to detect these complexities yet. I need to experiment with them more before I can draw definitive conclusions.

I was reading that great thread you were involved in with the Japanese products. I hope to find some of the other ones mentioned like Eroica and MG5. I was able to find a bottle of Valcan. Oddly it was labeled EDT on the actual bottle but the import sticker/translation on the back called it a hair tonic. Any input on that?

I'm also interested in anything you have to say about that G creme in a jar (don't remember the exact name) that I think you said you had found in some dusty old arcade. [edit: it was thunderball who found it nevermind] Have you tried that yet?

My bottle of Valcan says "After Shave Lotion" on the front label in English, and also says the same thing in Japanese on the back. I've never seen Valcan EdT (the only EdT version of the popular AS's that I've found is Eroica), but Hair Tonic & Liquid is pretty common. If you post a photo of the labels I can tell you what's what.

The scents are definitely different, with Mandom being the most unusual. Valcan, Bravas and some of the others have some strange notes to them, but overall aren't that odd. Lucido is fairly scentless so it doesn't really stand out. Eroica is very much like Tabac--maybe a bit more citrus.

+1, Lucido is very nice. Despite having alcohol in it there is little to no burn, which may or may not be a good thing. It is also very inexpensive, 125ml for $8, cool bottle too.

Cheers,
David

I didn't purchase the Valcan and have no pics as I figured the original label which said EDT was probably correct and I don't have much interest in EDTs.

Will be going to another Japanese market shortly and hope to find the AS version which should be clearly labeled as such per your info (thanks).

Dude,

There's Lucido...

And then there's MANDOM.

Same parent corporation, but Lucido is unscented (as much as it can be anyhow, smelled rather alcoholic to my nose), whereas MANDOM is fully scented:w00t:.

Sixgun smoke, high octane jet fuel gas fumes, and the new car smell of a 1973 Lincoln Towncar that you just drove off the lot at 85 mph, with the tires squealing, after paying cash for the car.

That is what MANDOM smells like.

Lucido is simply a nice aftershave.

MANDOM is a lifestyle choice!

Charles Bronson wasn't always a MANDOM man.

Sort of like the 98 pound weakling tired of getting sand kicked in his face, here is Charles learning the way of MANDOM from Toshiro Mifune:

Since he became a MANDOM man, nobody, and I mean nobody has thrown Charles down in the dirt!

This Mandom thing is really intriguing from all the BB talk. No luck hunting for them in Singapore. While there are other Lucido stuffs, there aint any Lucido AS as well!

Shucks..

I feel like I am devoid of an important Mandom shaving rite of passage

Is shipping a harmless bottle of Mandom from Japan an excruciating affair ?

Not excruciating really but Mandom is getting quite hard to find and it is of course a heavy bottle which means shipping ends up being more than the juice itself. (and of course you have to lie to the post office about what it is you're shipping).

Shipping might be high but worth it!
