Thread: Canes?

  1. #1

    Default Canes?

Old age and injuries are conspiring against me.

Anyone have an online source for GOOD solid canes? Real bent wood, not these hollow aluminum cr@p or softwood canes with cut handles. And they need to be available in longer sizes, as most are about an inch too short. I can cut it shorter if needed, but can't stretch one...

Having just recently shed my cane, I want no part of this thread, at least for another twenty years.

I have two, one came from my Grandfather who used it in his later years in the field while handling his Beagles. The second I purchased for use while recovering from an injury. I wish I could find the gentleman I purchased my cane.

My recommendation would be one constructed from hickory with a crook handle. That configuration is solid and with some practice is an excellent defense tool should someone try to take advantage of your disability. There are some combat cane sites, but some of them are more pricey than necessary, IMO of course.

I will follow along to find out your final decision.

I agree. I would take a good oak, maple or ash version as well.

They have to pay attention to the grain, though--none of these blindly machine-turned from sawn blanks. If I had a dollar for every shovel, hammer, axe handle that I have broken because it didn't follow the grain.

The links so far have been very helpful, thanks. But keep 'em coming...

+1. They're also very useful for getting (non-breakable) things from high places.

Perchance are you after a high quality sword cane? If so, look here. I'm rather fond of this one.

Check out The Walking Cane Store.com. I got a great one of a kind cane for my father that was made from a tree root. Very reasonable too.

If you want one you can thump someone with if push comes to shove, have a look at these.

You can really ruin someone's day with one of those. I had a kick boxing instructor who said he'd rather one of those for up close and personal confrontations than a hand gun. After seeing him action, I believe him. Of course he had four black belts in different disciplines.

One of those could certainly leave things in a state of General Dissaray, Professor Chaos.
Be there or be square. Only I can do both!
I've got a cat named Beefeater and a dog named Beefeater, and two goldfish called Beefeater and Beefeater. There's Beefeater my hamster and Beefeater my horse, and my piglet, known as Beefeater of course.

I have always been intrigued by sword canes, but ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side.

Those are beautiful! I wish someone would get me the commemorative Napoleon one.

A cane can be an excellent self-defense weapon, even without the épée. It does take some practice, but you'd might as well learn if you are planning to use the cane anyway. A good arnis/escrima/kali school could help you out.

Let's not forget that sword-canes are illeeeeegal in certain places.

... but walking down the street with a cane or walking stick (that just happens to be solid hardwood and very "useful" in the right hands) ... just fine.

Google and find a farm store online if one is not in your area and get a good Hickory Stock Cane cut to fit add a rubber foot on the bottom and your done for less than $15.00 bucks and it will break bones.

Actually, they are up to $20. But all of them I found were too short.

I need to find a farmstore that carries a full shepherds crook and cut that down. I will put a heavy metal ferrule on the bottom just for good measure.

I like that coldsteel citystick (that big metal handle hits like a sledge hammer!) but it looks a little too dapper for me.
