    Question Setting up my Progress

Just purchased a Murker Progress and as yet have not used it.Was thinking of waiting untill I was off for Christmas holidays as I will have plenty of time to play around with it.I know others have touched on the setting of this razor but I am still unclear what to do. The dial at the bottom starts at 1 and goes to 5 .One being the less agressive, indeed the blade may not even touch your skin.Although the dial is bumbered to5 you can rotate the dial about three full turns untill there is a large gap between the lower bar and blade(most agressive). This means the setting ranges from 1 to about 15. As a new user to DE what should I open the razor to(1-15) I had thought about 5?
    Please advise !!

    Alan:

The Progress is one of my favorite razors! Without a blade, my 1 lines up with the dot on the handle. With a blade, it aligns at about 1.5 or so. Since my beard isn't particularly tough, I can shave with mine at around 4 and get great shaves. I really think it's only designed to go from 1 to 5, not 1 to 15 although you could get it to that point. I'd give it a try at around 3 or 4 and see how it shaves. If you don't feel like it's getting close enough, dial it up to 4 or 5 and see what happens. I know Ron dials his past 5 a few more numbers but I'm not sure where he stops it. My counsel would be to start low and open it up until you get the shave you're looking for.

Also, some will start with a more aggressive setting for N/S passes and dial down for S/N passes. Others do just the opposite, while some leave it on the same setting for all passes. You'll just have to experiment to see what works for you. Just make sure the hash mark on the top of the razor aligns with the triangle on the base of the handle.

    Good luck

    Red face Razor burn

    Thanks Jerry!!

Tried shaving with it this morning and set it to four. Was very pleased with the shave although I find when I come to shave my neck I always get razor burn.I do a N S pass over and under my jaw bonefinisning half way down my neck.I
then shave from my throat back to mt ear(in the direction of my beard growth)
The only problem is it gives me razor burn (at my lower neck shirt line).Iam using body shop soap with a brush. Could I be doing some thing wrong?

    Regards Alan

Jerry gave you some good advice - the Progress was meant to be used only one revolution from its tightest position. If you loosen it more, you run the risk of the blade becoming loose.

As for your neck, try dialing it all the way down for your last pass. You could also insert an across the grain pass (ear-chin) and try that.

Did I understand that your neck whiskers grow upwards, S-N? You might also want to try shaving with the grain first there, meaning S-N for your first pass. Then do your against the grain pass with the Progress dialed all the way down.

    Alan,
As for what Scotto said, I find that on my neck the lower hairs grow in a S-N direction whereas the top half of my neck grows in a N-S direction. Therefore, on my first pass for my neck, I go N-S for the top half and then S-N on the bottom half. This has worked well for me. And of course when I do my against the grain pass, I just go in reverse. Best of luck. Let us know how things turn out.

I use mine at 4-6 depending on which blade I use. The irritation is comming from a bad razor angle. Experiment with it.

+1, There has been quite a few topics popping up that are 3-4 years old, why? It is especially irritating in the BST forum.

    Cheers,
