Ollegha (probably spelled it wrong) bay rum company has some very nice glass stoppered cobalt blue bottles for sale at about $10 each. They also have lables available in an old style that looks classy. I used some then treated the labels with some amber shellac to give them a dark aged look.

Or you could hit the junk shops and antique stores for a vintage bottle. Then peel and stick the lable off of plactic. I got each of the pinaud bottles for under $3.00. You just got to do some searching but they are out there. Click image for larger version.

  4. Default Aftershave in Plastic Bottles

Interesting question (I think). I've had the same bottle of Pinaud Clubman for about 6 months now. I notice that it doesn't smell the same either in the bottle or on my face. Now, that's not to say it's it putrid now, far from it, but it doesn't have the same smell to it. Does the plastic seep into the liquid after a while, thereby changing the smell? And if it does, should I decant into a glass bottle? What are your thoughts on plastic containers for fragrances?

Some people think it changes scent, some don't. I've found some scents ARE affected, but some aren't.

heat and light affect aftershaves and fragrances way more than a plastic bottle

What do you mean by that? I don't usually keep my aftershave in warm places or in places where light would hit it, but I can get pretty warm in the house during the day, like up in the 80s. Could that make a difference?

I reckon that a glass bottle is better. I transferred the Veg in a glass bottle and the scent is very different if I keep smelling the plastic vs. glass... The transformation happens in ~7 days... Is it better or worse? Well, you got to try it... YMMV!

I move all my spices into glass containers and it seems to work better than keeping them in plastic. My bet would also be that plastic AS bottles affect the scent of the product, so I try to transfer into glass bottles whenever I can, though I can't say that my senses are astute enough to notice a difference. If nothing else, I prefer handling glass bottles over using plastic.

All of my A/S that come in plastic are immediately moved to glass. I find it improves the scent and the glass is more pleasing to my eye.

Interesting. Are you using old fragrance bottles or do you have a source of small decanters that you like?

You can use anything really... Avon had nice decanters that could be reused (I got one shaped as a shave brush). Other nice containers could be a hot sauce bottle such as Tabasco as they have a good stopper...

I use empty Texas Pete bottles but that is just because we go through a lot of Texas Pete. Check out this place too, I have some of their bottles http://www.specialtybottle.com/saucebottlesmi.aspx

Would a cologne bottle work? I only currently have bottles with a sprayer, so that might not be so great, but could I potentially find some cheap cologne that comes in a glass bottle and doesn't have a sprayer?

Here are 2. One mixed spice in a Tobasco bottle and one in a Frank's bottle. The Franks bottle has nice raised glass. Sorry about the quality...but better than nothing.

Both bottles have the controlled pour spout. On the larger Franks bottle I used the P&G OS bottle to cut out the logo and taped it to the glass bottle. Tacky, I know...but at least there won't be any confusion.

    Hope you like.

The small Tabasco 57ml bottle is pretty awesome if well cleaned. The pouring bit is made of glass and part of the bottle. I got to refill mine every 3-4 weeks which isn't too bad IMO...

I think you are correct in that assessment. I don't remember where I heard or read about it, but if you re-fill a plastic beverage bottle enough times there is some seepage. It's kind of like re-using a plastic container of household cleaner, you just instinctively don't do it.

Lilac Vegetal was the one that convinced me that the container makes a difference. First I refrigerated it, which helped unlock the intended scent, and then I re-located the contents into a glass bottle which also has the same effect. I have a spare bottle in my shaving cabinet I haven't used yet, and if I get a whiff of it in the plastic bottle I'll get the urine-like smell people laugh about.

I originally thought the same thing about Pinaud Clubman but am having second thoughts. I had a plastic bottle I bought years ago then forgot about and thought the smell was a little funky. I bought a new bottle and on first impression it seemed to smell better (or fresher). Then later on I decided that the old bottle of Clubman didn't smell bad after all.

I think Lilac Vegetal is more affected by the plastic bottle than the Clubman. If you don't have a glass bottle handy, try refrigerating it.

Bumping this one back up! Those hot sauce bottles are quite useful since they (most of them) have a stopper. Those who don't have one are a bit tricky to use sometimes. I used to buy the Grace hot pepper sauce (made in Jamaica) since they have a nice 5oz bottle with a built-in stopper. Surprise, surprise, they stop making the stopper bit and now I'm back to my Tabasco bottles (57ml). I found today the same hot sauce discounted at 65 cents (yes, that's $0.65) since it's going bad in a year... I almost drink that stuff so it will all be gone by the expiry date... I got the last 3 bottles. Pictures to come when ready!

I used a Texas Pete bottle for decanting some Clubman a couple of days ago. Just as a precaution though, after washing out with dish soap and water, I also swished around some diluted rubbing alcohol. Alcohol gets rid of hot peppers better than anything else, and it removes the risk of the sauce affecting the scent.
