wrist watch websites - french, swiss, german marques

timezone.com is the B&B or basenotes of the watch world, except possibly more so.
They have almost thirty separate active brand forums, amongst others, and two very busy sales forums.
All my horological referencing begins here.

watchnet.com is another reliable, versatile site, albeit smaller scale.

I'm a member and it's as gentlemanly as this site. I highly recommend it.

You have some good info about the different watch forums. Lots of knowledge available on those sites. There are hundreds of choices, so you really need to determine a budget before you start looking. Since you are looking for a "lifetime watch" if your budget allows, I'd start with...JLC, IWC, and GO. If not, take a look at Stowa, Sinn, Omega, Rolex, etc. It's just about impossible to make a bad choice with any of these brands. Once you decide on a style/brand take a look at the preloved models for sale on the different forums. It's a very easy way to save THOUSANDS of dollars on your purchase. If you do decide to go the preloved route...Buy the Seller and you won't have any worries.
