Default FS: Mint PUMA 96 - 5/8" Hollow Ground

This is the famous PUMA razor that legends are made from. It is mint. New old stock and I doubt you will see another one at this price. It 100% genuine with a guarantee numbered to match the blade.

I can not say that Puma's are the best straight razors ever made but if they are not, they are certainly at the top of the list. I have used one and the edge is smooth and sharp and provides a fantastic 24/7 daily shave. Incidentally many straight razor users think they are the best.

This is not a flavor of the month razor, it is a stunning total quality item.

It has a full mirror finish, with gimps top and bottom. The blade centers perfectly. This razor sets the standard by which other German razors were judged.
Incidentally, PUMA rejected any razor with a fault. Period.

THE PRICE IS $300 and excludes insured airmail postage which as an example will be $15 to the USA. I accept paypal and this price which is the minimum I can accept will remain for one week only. First to send a pm will secure.

    Thanks for looking.

What a gorgeous razor! That alone would be enough to get me into shavin with a straight.

I don't normally fall for round points, but that is one sweet looking razor.

Curious: approximately when would this have been made?

Beautiful razor! I wasn't aware that Lauterjung & Sohn made Pumas, however. Did they acquire the company at some point?

While I don't want to put the keibosh on your sale, the price concerns me enough that I feel I should express that concern. How can I put this delicately... ...Perhaps that the asking price strains the spirit of the BST forum? To put that statement in context, I picked up a near mint Puma 89 (13/16) here for just over 1/3 the price. Additionally, the last Puma Gold, also a 5/8, I saw was in very good condition and listed for not much more than this razor. Of course it is minty and therefore may command a premium, in some arenas.

Again, it is your razor and you are entitled to try to get a fair price for the razor. I simply felt that I should post my thoughts.

To further this post, I sold a NOS 13/16 Puma here five months ago for $190 shipped worldwide. It had the Puma booklet and case. I was the first person to unseal the package, which I did solely to take the photos.

I think that this razor was made before the second world war. It is the most desirable PUMA that came out of the PUMA factory and was produced under the full PUMA quality control which was legendary. Many of the post second world war PUMA's were made from PUMA steel blanks but in non PUMA factories. After the war PUMA actually were getting out of razor manufacture.

The razor is considered to be the best production razor to have ever been made. They come up for sale in mint condition very very rarely.

Used Puma's are quite common place and the price you pay for a used Puma varies. For example, Item number: 290332785905 is for sale on www.ebay.co.uk looks to be great value. £22 as I write. It is exactly the same type of razor as the one I am selling and looks to me to be in a perfectly usable condition.

The two members who have questioned the price I have asked really should do there research before being critical. The price I am asking is actually about one third of the price that I have seen other MINT examples sell for.

When they do the research instead of shooting from the hip they may wish to offer an apology.

On occasion, I sell and repair vintage razors as a hobby. I don't make money from my hobby. I also find the comments from the two members to be petty, unnecessary, insulting and totally uncalled for.

English: on any "valuable" razor people will disagree with any pricepoint. The criticism above is tacfull, and for potential buyers it's good to know why the price is high. Some people don't mind paying alot, but an informed buy is always better than someone buying at a high price and later discovering that there's nothin special about said item except for it's rarity & condition.

It's a beauty. Too bad I'm just after stainless ones myself.

Hmm... I dont think the intent of either of those members was to "be petty, unnecessary, insulting and totally uncalled for".

Healthy comments on pricing, particularly when the prices are felt to be too high are generally smiled upon and in the overall best interest of B&B members. We tend to point it out when there is an item which seems overpriced. Both of those members who commented have a good reason to comment, as they obviously have done their research on B&B seeing how they both posted a scenario to back themselves up, as well as both being quite knowledgeable in straight razor lore.

Dont assume people are attacking you, as they are not. We are simply looking out for those who may not know that this is a little overpriced and end up regretting it by being uninformed.

    English,

I did not mean to be "petty, unnecessary, [or] insulting" and am sorry you took it that way. I do, however, stand by the content of my post. As you are surely aware, there have been numerous posts about the spirit of this BST forum. I, and possibly many others, do not view it as a place to sell things for profit. Although I don't have many sales, you can research them to see if my actions are consistent with my words.

Which is not to say that you are selling the razor at price that includes a handsome profit. I don't know what you paid for the razor so I cannot gauge how much I'd ask for it. Yet I do know how much I have paid for Pumas as well as how much others have sold them for. Not the least of which was a 6/8 Puma Gold, admittedly missing some gold wash, which priced within 10% of your asking price. Based my experience alone, I question(ed) your price.

Bear in mind that there are a lot of guys here getting their feet wet, as it were, wet shaving. Some are picking up a DE for the first time, others transitioning to straights. They come to B&B for advice, insight and input from more experienced members. It is conceivable that some of these gents might have rightly heard that Pumas are superb razors and not know that the last three or four posted here sold for considerably less.

Lastly, I am not entirely certain that EBay is the best place to research prices. Perhaps you recall a Dubl Duck that sold for more than $1000 recently? If that seller posted here asking $300 for the very same Duck, I'd ask him too if the price was in keeping with the spirit of this forum.

Should you consider $300 for your Puma in line with, again, the spirit of this forum just say so. No need to deride reasonable questions as petty and insulting.

Yes it is. FWIW, Peter is a stand up guy and someone that I've bought from. I'd highly recommend him in terms of communication and standing behind his transactions. The price is for a mint condition, highly regarded blade. If the price is high (which I'm not convinced of considering many NOS sales that I have seen), the objections have been aired and all are aware that the OP thinks it is fairly priced and some others think it is steep.

I know that if for any reason the buyer isn't happy with the razor, Peter makes a habit of offering a full refund (minus shipping). I have no reason to doubt that he will in this case as well (although I am not speaking for him). Also, even though eBay isn't a great resource for pricing here on B&B, I think that most of us agree that this razor would bring at least this asking price if not more on eBay.

Best of luck with the sale
