And the journey begins.... Welcome! :badger:
Smart move to get the VDH set. Good soap, nice bowl, and the brush -- well, some people say that the hairs fall out, but I've never experienced that. I like it; it's my travel brush. Like any boar...
If he stops anytime, soon or otherwise, I hope he'll sell the business (and his secret soap-making formulas) for a bundle, to someone who can keep the magic going. But -- of course -- I hope he'll...
Scroll to the bottom of his Welcome page to see which orders are currently being processed.
I managed to find De Zemler's book; it looks like a good read. Two of the Yardley ads were tucked in the front cover. The second one is from the June 13, 1960 issue of Time magazine. (There was no...
Not that I've noticed.
I guess I'll have to try decanting The Veg into glass at some point, but, really, I think it's fine out of the plastic bottle.
It's a mistake to judge The Veg by how it smells right after you put...
Let me add to the chorus of praise for Mike's Hungarian Lavender.
I had my first shave with it yesterday. The lavender scent is fresh and clear, with no hint of anything medicinal or artificial....
Another De Zemler record: his listing and ad in the 1940 Manhattan White Pages (from the New York Public Library's nifty Direct Me NYC site).
Edit: Recropped White Pages listing to include phone...
I have 2 UFO handles, a Goliath in red bronze and a Kaiser in aircraft aluminum, and they're both beauties. Rafael does wonderful work.

There's wisdom in having a simple set-up and sticking with it. Finding the right products in each category requires some experimenting, though, and that's where you run the risk of falling down the...
Well said, Phil. I'm all for keeping the conversation here civilized and suitable for general audiences.
The suggestion to use a spoiler for on-topic-but-gory pictures is an excellent one. I don't...
You're shaving with a piece of history; the plating loss is evidence of that. Think of it as a noble flaw, part of the charm of using a vintage razor.
You can subscribe to the RSS feed. A reader like TICKR will display the feed ticker-style on your desktop. Of course, there are readers for phones and tablets, too.
Look into Foxit. The PDF reader is free and very good; it's been my default reader for years. There are modules for creating, modifying and adding security to PDFs, at prices that compare favorably...
+1. If you know your tools, you can get a superior shave with either.
Trumper's Rose -- a complex, earthy scent that's not perfume-y or artificial-smelling. I've never had an issue with staining.
Ah, so. Some interesting vintage bottles you have there.
Can't blame you for that! Otherwise, the shave was normal?
Dapper, as you'd expect. (I'm a bow-tie fan, myself.)
Tantalizing! Yes, PB-84 refers to the Parke-Bernet auction room on East 84th Street, with TR-9 8300 being the phone number (remember when...
If you have access to The New Yorker Digital Archive, look for Richard O. Boyer's profile of De Zemler, in the November 16, 1946 issue of the magazine, starting at page 37 (see the OP for a link). It...
The 1934 article mentions that he was an apprentice in Stockholm 34 years earlier, so in 1900. I found a 1940 census entry for a Charles DeZemler born in Sweden, living in Scarsdale, NY; his age is...
Stephan 320 Astringent -- a soothing, old-school barbershop scent that I hadn't used for a couple of years. It was nice to rediscover it.
Well, one of the articles says he came to this country in 1912, so that would make him over 100. I found this Aug. 9, 1964 obituary in the NY Times, but of course it may not be the same person.

+1. Great detail work -- the numbers, wow!
I have a number of Fatip + Weber handle razors, one of them Cerakoted. The only difference in the shave is that the Cerakote one gives a lot more...
Welcome, and a very impressive collection! Have you tried any Pinaud, Master, Stephan, or Gabel's? They are all old-school scents, reasonably priced, and get a lot of love around here.
It's, um, an unusual scent, but it can grow on you. Nice cool blast for the warm weather, too.
Fabulous! Enjoy, and pass them down to your kids and grandkids.
Check out Sandy1's review of Imari on FPN.
First-rate ink reviewer, by the way. None better.
Welcome! :badger:
Hey, I was 60 when I picked up a DE razor for the first time in 40 years (and joined B&B). Never say never!
Good idea, for sure. (I was hoping you'd come back and say you Photoshopped those pictures, but I guess not. :scared:)
No razor should wreak that kind of destruction. I'm guessing there's a...
As long as you don't actually pay a dollar a blade, you're alright.
But seriously -- this is a great deal at that price.
Sure does look that way. Let us know how it shaves. (The short-comb side looks pretty mean, so be careful! :scared:)
I think you mean less than 10 cents a blade.... :tongue_sm
The mystical MWF. Treat it right -- flood the puck with warm water, but make sure the brush isn't too wet when you load it, and make sure you load it slowly and for a long time -- and it will...
Not sure I get the concept of a stupid razor.
In fact, many people, myself included, use the R41 because they appreciate the close shave it gives and enjoy the direct, straight-like sensation of...
Pressing down too hard, probably. You've got to teach him the "no pressure" routine.
I love Arko. :a3:
I love The Veg. :a19:
I love PAL blue carbon steel SE blades. :sleep12:
Bet that last one really threw ya. :a21:
Fun stuff.
