So I am thinking it might be easier for me to get into straight razor shaving by making one, or in this case modifying one. I seen all the posts about the Gold Dollar razors and what people can do with them and thought "wow, this may be a way for me to have a decent looking and working shaver". Also I like tinkering with building and rebuilding things. I have been reading and looking at all the tutorials and they are all well written and have great pictures showing the steps.

So now I need to come up with a list of things I will need, here's what I have so far:

Gold Dollar razors (1 or 2 should be good)
pins and washers
scales or material to make scales
wedge or material to make a wedge
various tools, dremel, ball peen hammers, saws and sand paper

What else am I missing? I have seen supply stores online but I am not looking for 100 pins and washers. I really only need a couple sets of each piece to get started. Besides if I can not do it or don't like doing it I don't want to have all these extra pieces laying around. I will also need to sent the blade out once done to get honed. I don't have the supplies or know how to hone it myself.

The scales were pretty shabby, so I ordered some pre-made T-I replacement scales thinking they would fit. Well, they didn't. And not knowing how to make an angled wedge for custom scales of my own, the blade just sat in my "to do" pile for several months.

Enter Doc226. A couple of weeks back, he posted a similar T-I blade with blonde horn scales that he had made for a client. Immediately, I thought of my sculpted blade just sitting idle and contacted him about making a similar set of scales. His terms were generous and he threw in honing the blade as part of a package deal. Wanting to try the Doc edge, I agreed.

Throughout the process, Doc kept me informed as to the progression of things, with photos. Attached below are two photos that he sent me as the blade had reached completion. He even went so far as to send me a video of the blade passing an HHT!

The razor arrived today, stropped and "shave-ready." So I spritzed it off with alcohol and shaved with it this evening. Two passes, plus touch-ups and I had a very nice shave. Had to finish with the Veg in honor of the master here.

So it's hat's off to Doc on this one!

Having restored a few razors before (which typically consisted of unpinning, sanding, sanding, sanding, more sanding, polishing, repinning, followed by more polishing), I picked up this little beauty at a local antique store at a fair price. It's a 7/8 George Wostenholm & Sons Sheffield wedge. As you can see, it was definitely showing it's age when I first got it... and that's when I had second thoughts about completely restoring it. Since this thing likely dates back to the mid-19th century and the razor is mostly intact, I figured that it would be a shame to wipe out all that history entirely. So, I decided to take a somewhat minimalist approach with this one. The only tools to touch this razor were a jeweler's hammer to tighten the pivot, a Dremel with a felt wheel & jeweler's rouge, and a nylon bristle attachment to get the gunk out at the pivot. No sanding, no cutting - just a nice polishing. All in all, I'm very pleased with the results. Now I just need to get this guy shave ready and I'll be set (I'm still debating whether or not to attempt to hone it myself).
Here are the scales. I think I may need to get some granite to flatten the scales since they are all multilevel with some sandpaper. Right?
The blade was an old restoration project I bought from Noah on the BST, it's a sweet blade!.

And here's wood that I have here to use along with alot of bamboo
<a href="http://badgerandblade.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=334873&d=1368755770" title="Name: IMG_20130517_100718.jpg

My questions are what wood am I using? and 2) how to finish it? I don't have access to alot of stuff here, and shipping can get ridiculous. There is a DIY club kinda far away where they have lacquer classes and they will teach me how to finish it( but I heard lacquer was poisonous) and I can get Tung oil but its like $33 here.

Also 3) Wedges.. what should I use. I've given you everything I have as far as wood sources along with Tree of heaven and Jujube tree . Ordering bone or horn has been a hassle that I'd rather purchase it when I get back to NY. Problem is I don't have the equipment so I will have to rent some studio or something or wait 3 months.

Any input is welcome. Thanks!

So, I have very little idea of what I am doing.

I bought a coarse knife hone for lapping and a Norton 4k/8k combo hone to try and get some Ebay rescues shave ready. A tutorial on You Tube by a well regarded individual who shall remain nameless (don't think he is in here) said the 4/8k was all I needed.

So, I took three and set to work. They were all about pocket knife sharp, and I got two to the point where they would shave. They were not as sharp as my shavette nor provided nearly as smooth a shave as my DEs.

Thinking I had a lot to learn, I bought a few Gold Dollars and figured I could play with those, and asked someone for help with the honing a razor or two so I knew what 'correct' felt like. Meanwhile, I bought some lapping film off Amazon and am waiting to see if that will help, but it may well be technique.

While waiting, the postman came with a different package--the GDs came in, and based on what I have read, they required some sanding. When I opened the box, I immediately saw what folks were talking about.

So, I got out the Dremel with the rubber sanding drum and put some rough sandpaper on it and let the sparks fly for an hour. I had a cup of water and alternated razors when one became too warm. Ground down the shoulder with ugly results, but I think I'm still okay. Then I got a little crazy and flattened the rounded edgemoff one and tried tomput one of those W&B barber notches in the other. I know you guys are used to sexier project pics, so I will post my ugly results here so those projects look WAY better by comparison, and to get feedback.

As you can see, I chewed them up a bit, but I am hoping I can sand that down and blend it into the finish some. I definitely feel like a nonswimmer who jumped into the deep end of the pool--grinding, stropping, and honing are all quite new to me. Next up, attemped honing through 8k.

First up, a "Shepherd." My guess is that this is the Shepherd of Marshes & Shepherd, before he partnered with Marshes. If this is the case - and the craftsmanship and age make it a good possibility - this is a rare find indeed.
Next is an 8/8 F. Fenney "Tally-Ho" with Masonic symbols on the face in some amazing burled elm. The blade got a light cleaning to preserve the Masonic etchings:
Next - A pristine "Packwood" razor with spine jimps in smokey horn scales that I made. Did you know Packwood was one of the royal cutlers? All the more cool!
