Quick review of three bigger brushes.
-Kent BK8, T&H 1/3 Silver tip, Whipped Dog 30MM Silver Tip set at 50mm loft.

First a little background:

Been wet shaving for over a year, face latherer with TOBS creams. The first three months were with the AOS starter fine brush and then made the move to the Vulfix 2235 in Super. IMO this is an underated brush.

So after a year at the task, I wanted to get my first Simpson. After reading the reviews, etc, etc, etc, I ordered a Simpson’s Classic 2 in Super from WCS. Great brush, just not my cup of tea. Maybe I was spoiled by the big pillow flop of the Vulfix…I dunno.

Then in Feb of this year I read the threads on the T & H brushes and Rooney making them denser any maybe a new supplier for T&H….got the 1/2 and liked it so much I also ordered the 1/3. About that time the Kent BK 8 went on sale. I also purchased a 30mm (set at 50mm loft) from Whipped Dog.

So at the end of the day, I prefer the large contact area and little to no scritch. I prefer the fan knots and will probably try the flat knots here in a bit.

Here is my review of the Kent BK8, T&H 1/3 Silver tip, Whipped Dog 30MM Silver Tip set at 50mm loft.

Kent BK 8. This stupid brush. It does it all. If I had to pick a favorite this would be it. It does NOT have the softest tips, but it has a slight amount of less backbone that makes me prefer it over the T &H. And for some reason with that little handle I can control it perfectly. I have some large hands, XL gloves and can palm a basketball, but I like that little controllable handle. The handle, the soft tips, and the slightly less backbone that cover me like a pillow. It is a keeper.

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthr...pid-Kent-BlK-8!

T&H 1/3. This one, just by a smidge has the softest tips out there, and it also has the more backbone than the kent, and in my optic has the densest knot. This is great brush. Soft tips, plenty of backbone, dense big knot, seriously what is not to like. If not for that stupid BK 8, this would be my go to brush.

Whipped Dog 30mm Silvertip set at 50mm. This brush is GREAT, especially for the price and the custom handle. The handle is significantly heavy and makes face lathering a dream. This is the least dense knot in the bunch, that is not saying a whole lot as the other two are know for their density. If I did not have the other two this quality brush would be my everyday workhorse. Seeing as I have discovered I like some flop as opposed to a scrubby brush, I would prob steam the knot out and try it at 5mm increments. Soft tips, huge knot, easy flow and release of the lather, and Larry is a pro to work with, again a AWESOME brush.

Thought I would pass on what I have found out. Hopefully someone will find it useful.

See you around..

As a newbie to wet shaving, I'm obviously trying to build my den up with some decent items. Here's the thing: the only brush I have is the lame little baby brush that comes with the AOS sampler set, and it's just not cutting the mustard. It's too small, hairs fall out every time I use it, and I feel like I want something softer for my sensitive cheeks and neck.
I'm not about to spend 200 bones on a silvertip badger brush (at least not yet), but I want something of quality that I'll be consistently happy shaving with. It just seems like there's such a large realm of possibility when it comes to these things that I really don't know where to begin.

Friends, colleagues... I look to you for guidance.

Ok, so I'm relatively new to traditional shaving (since October of last year), and have had the same brush for the past 7-8 months. The brush I speak of is a synthetic one made by Jack Black (the men's grooming product line, not by the lead singer of Tenacious D, lol). It's pillow-soft and and an all around great brush, but I have a thick, course beard and had been considering a boar brush.
So after I saw that WCS was sold out of the B&B Essential boar, I did some research here and settled on a Semogue 620.

It arrived today, and I was very happy - the bristles were every bit as firm and "scrubby" as I had hoped that they would be. Then... came the shave.

THAT SMELL! For the love of everything that is good THAT HORRIBLE SMELL! I couldn't even finish my first pass with my Harris Windsor, as the smell was completely overpowered by the smell of a dead, wet pig - rotting in the African sun. I finished my shave with my faithful Jack Black brush, then went to my den and pulled out a tub of Mama Bear's soap. I bought 3 full pucks of her soaps and unfortunately can't use them because they burn my face, so I figured I'd put at least one to good use in order to de-funk my new boar. I opened my tupperware full of "Hydrogen" and lathered that stinky thing for a good 10 minutes - my sink was literally full of lather, as I'd dip the brush in my mug of warm water and go right back to swirling, swirling, swirling - then re-dip and swirl some more.

I rinsed it out, wiped it dry and set it on my sink to dry. I went into my bathroom a few minutes ago and lo and behold - the smell of a bag of burning bigfoot hair filled my nose.

WHEN DOES THE FUNK GO AWAY?!? EVER? I don't see how!

other that that I like the brush :w00t:

Gentlemen,

I need some advice from all of the Badger & Blade Brush Veterans. :001_smile For anyone that has experience with these brushes...

* Can anyone elaborate on the Feel (Softness) and Backbone and Latherability of a Shavemac Regular Silvertip Badger vs. their D01 Silvertip Badger Brush?

From what I understand, their D01 Two-Band is denser and scrubbier (and a lather hog?) compared to many brushes. So that had me wondering how their D01 Silvertip is.

As someone coming from a Simpsons Duke 3 Best Badger, how does the Shavemac D01 Silvertip and their Regular Silvertip compare?

FYI, I'm a Bowl Latherer, and I like my Duke 3 Best Badger for its Soft face feel, and moderate Backbone.

Thanks for the advice! :biggrin1:

I'm looking to purchase a new Thater bulb-shaped brush, but can't decide on the size. The two I'm considering are the 4292 silver tip 110 mm overall height with a 23 mm knot, or the 4292 silver tip overall height 112 mm with a 25 mm knot. My favourite brushes right now are a Rooney Finest s2/s1 and a Simpsons Colonel. I lather on my face exclusively and use shaving cream 95% of the time. I want to diversify my brush collection, which currently consists of the aforementioned two brushes, a Simpsons Wee Scot and a Kent B&B 2008 LE. I use all these brushes regularly and find each of them suit my lathering style. The Thater will be my first bulb-shaped brush and my concern is that the one with the 25 mm knot may just be too big. On the other hand, I could just purchase a Simpsons Chubby 1 in Super, but I think the Thater would meet my desire to diversify better. I'd appreciate your thoughts and comments.
