I finally went a head an glued the knot to the handle. I used a silicone adhesive so if needed I can undo it and re-do it.
The handle is a rubberset 4, aluminum. I use two quarters to create a shelf. I just used the glue around to keep them and seal the area. As for the knot, I put a dab on the base of the knot, not around it or anything like that. It stays put.
Is it recommended to put glue also around the knot or all the way up the handle? I keep reading here "less is more" and I can see how I can create a mess.
On the other hand, nothing is preventing water to accumulate slightly above the knot base and I don't like the idea of standing water.
Any thoughts?

i have one as well as a couple more ace knots coming in 24mm high density. im thinking about also getting a couple tgn knots. what would be comparable and what would be better in the tgn knots. i thought the ace a bit scritchy myself when compared to the knot i got from larry (his silvertip) i like a very soft fuller knot with some backbone though which i know has a lot to do with how its set. i even considered the high mountain from tgn but a bit pricey for me right now.

i did read the description on their site but they give most of them the same description or similar. can someone explain the real world differences between them? and how do they compare to the ace knots i have now (24mm high density)?

these are what i was looking at:

Premium Silvertip Bader Hair
Premium Silvertip- Top of the line silvertip, very soft natural tips, well packed, great for face lathering,
Super Silvertip - Top of the line, soft creamy white natural tips well packed.
Silvertip Grade A, - Top of the lineSoft creamy white natural tips, well packed.

Super Badger
Super badger is treated silvertip. This makes the tips whiter and softer. Very high quality knot, soft tips well packed available in Bulb or Fan shapes.

thank you

Hi gents!

Been a while since my last update from the garage! I thought I'd share with you the latest stuff to emerge from the wood shavings :)

I've been experimenting with some new techniques, inspired here and there by some of the work of you fine folks here and elsewhere.

<a href="http://badgerandblade.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=336098&d=1369183103" title="Name: 05-21-2013_1.jpg
This first pic (from left to right) - some big handles I've been trying out

1. Big blood wood shown with TGN finest 22mm
2. Hickory - I scorched this on the lathe with a torch prior to a danish oil first 2 coats finish. I couldn't be happier with the results. It really brings out some character in certain lighter coloured woods like this.
3. Gabon ebony top, Canadian maple bottom. This brush was inspired by an old restore one of you guys did a while ago. I really liked the shape and thought I'd give it a go. Very nice. I'm thinking I may paint on the "Gillette" script logo in white on the ebony part to add some flair.

05-21-2013_2.jpg

First three in progress (from left to right)
1. Mystery wood, but I believe it was birch. I torched it in similar fashion to #2 above, but experimented a bit more with highlighting regions. This is a neat technique that I expect will only get better with practice. I find using a nice oil base finish makes a huge difference in this. Both this brush and the previous #2 really were very lightly torched. It was the oil that brings out the darkness!
2. Another bloodwood. Happy with the shape.
3. Gabon ebony. This piece will be paired up with the matching ebony razor handle to see above #2 for a nice complete set!

As always, comments and feedback appreciated! Thanks a bunch guys!

Hello all. I'm sure there's a thread on this but i couldnt find it anywhere so if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

Have a few brushes I would like to start restoring and I started with this one because of the condition of the paint. Not much I can do to make it worse. I was very concerned about removing the old bristles cleanly and without damaging the brush (done) and am still going to sand, measure and set an inexpensive knot just for the experience. Of course if there is a way to bring this brush handle back to life I might go in a different direction with the knot. any suggestions welcome. (Sand and repaint completely?)

Everyone,

I am interested in doing a few restorations. I got a pretty nice ever-ready 200T in an Old Spice mug, but haven't found much around my area for older style brushes. Unless I want to get ones that are all cracked and crumbling, and then the antique store is still asking for $15 - $20 per brush, which seems a bit crazy to me for something that can't even be restored (or at least I am not sure I can restore a cracked/crumbling brush).

So do most of the people here who are doing restores, get their brushes from the bay? A little guidance would be welcome!!

Thanks!!

I didn't see any cracks, and was working slowly finishing the polish and it just disintegrated...

Here's the part that sucks: It was my great grandfather's brush. I never met him, but I recently received his razors, and just this past weekend his brush. Absolutely an irreplaceable item... I'm crushed right now.

Anyone ever have something similar happen where a handle just...... falls apart?

Saw this beauty in a shop, picked it up, gave the knot a small tug and the knot/ferrule came right off of the base. I was going to buy it anyways, but that just made it so much easier to deal with. Should have seen the sour look on the clerk's face when I showed her the two pieces and asked if there was any discount. The boar knot was still in good condition, but a bit thin and I'm not a fan of tall, small diameter boar knots.

This must be the reason why the base didn't stay attached. I suspect it happened early in the life of this brush. What you see is a thin layer of dried glue (?) that I poked a small hole into. I was really glad to see it wasn't solid.

And the base with ferrule already cleaned out. I attached a small, round file onto my drill press to clean out the hole and make it a tad bit larger.

A big chunk of catalin.

and glued up with a TGN 20mm Finest Badger Knot Fan set about 45-48mm

I could have gone with a larger knot - the handle would have looked maybe better with a larger knot - but I didn't want to enlarge the hole a lot. I like this size knot, I'm a face lather so this works for me.

The only handle I have that has that shape. Pretty neat and I was lucky to find it.

I am not a wood turner, unfortunately, but I like making brush handles. So I do what I can with what I have. I made a brush before, which you can read about here.

This one was roughed out on a table saw and shaped on a hand sander clamped in the workbench vise. I was inspired by the Semogue wooden handles like on SOC, 1305, 1250, 1800, 200, etc. I simply love the way these handles work and feel. My take on this design takes liberties, for sure, but the main elements of good grip and good length for bowls and such remain. I went a little crazy with the "waist", but the ergonomics work very well. It's a very comfortable brush to use.

The knot is 22mm TGN two band Finest and is set at 24mm X 49mm. I usually add 2mm to the size of the glue puck. These are +/- 0.5mm from TGN.

I still have not finished it to the end. I thought 3 layers of Danish Oil and some spray can polyurethane would do the trick, but the poly did not take and came off in sticky mess when I shaved with it. So I am going to sand it down and do more Danish Oil. I am thinking I just didn't do enough. Maybe I need more like 10 coats of DO and let it cure for a week or so. Then beeswax. I really have hard time getting these finishes right. Any help would be appreciated.
The only place I could track one down was Blanketty Blanks. I spoke to the guy on the phone and he said that his 14 mm knots were really tiny. He said he could turn down a 20 mm knot on his lathe for me which would give me a much higher loft. He charged me 10 bucks for the service.
