Hi all, newly registered to ask this question.

I don't have a thick full beard but just a tad more facial hair than the typical Asian.

Unfortunately enough to necessitate shaving, not enough to forgo shaving and keep a beard.

My early shaving experiences were with a DE that my dad used.

I was looking at the Merkur Futur but the 34C HD comes highly recommended around these parts.

What I'm asking is: Are they overkill if I don't have a thick beard? Should I consider something else?

Thanks in advance, looking forward to ditching my disposables.

For comparison, I also have a Feather AS-D2, Ikon OSS, Muhle R89, Merkur 34C, Merkur 1904 OC and Gillette Slim Adjustable. The Futur has taken its position as starter in the rotation. However, I have been so impressed with the Futur that I ordered the Vision. So there may be competition ahead. But for now, I can't recommend the Futur enough. I just face lathered with Proraso white and plowed through 2 days growth on a WTG pass at setting 2 and for a DFS could have stopped there with a little buffing. Dialed her down to one and did an ATG pass and was done. No irritation per the Alum block. High praise for the Futur.

Hello everyone,

I started DE shaving not so long ago, and was lucky enough to find two DE razors at my fathers house. Since he wasn't using them he gave them to me. One is Brazilian made Gillette most probably 1975 MonoTech, but even after some discussion here: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthr...-Aristocrat-B1, I'm not completely sure of it.
The other one is a no name OC travel razor, small and light. I thought Gillette would be great for me, but I was wrong. I thought that my shaving technique was to blame, me being new to this and all, but just out of curiosity I tried the OC travel razor and the results were significantly better. Almost no irritation on the neck and very few nicks the first time I shaved with it.
Since it's very small and light, and slightly damaged I decided to buy a bigger, more hefty and durable razor. At first I decided to get an open comb razor since I thought they are definitely more aggressive. However after searching the web I found that that's not entirely correct. I decided on a stainless steel razor because they are big, hefty and IMHO build to last, and after a thorough research two razors caught my attention: Above The Tie Titan H1 and iKon Deluxe OC (or a closed comb since I read that it's more aggressive one).
Now, I know that there other more, or slightly less aggressive razors, far less expensive than these two, but I think I have a bad case of RAD:drool:, and I justify it by telling myself that I just want a razor that is built with such a great quality and will last for generations, so just bear with me on this.

Sorry for the long introduction and thank you for your insight.

This Canadian WWII Tech shaves beautifully, but the plating is not that great. One flea-bite and a bit of 'bubbling' on top of the head, and underneath, there is a patch where it has worn off completely. Underneath, as you can see in the picture, the metal is black and rough to the touch. It seems to cause rust on blades after a few days. Any idea what the metal is, why it reacts like this, and if there's anything I can do (short of replating) to make it better? I'd like to keep shaving with it, but the rust on the blades is not ideal.
