one of the two razors I picked from the local antique stores .. they had more (like 30 from all stores together) but there were none other than this two that were even close to salvageable

This one, originally had been a barber notch but the owner notched it some more while trying to clean it :cursing: needles to say I got it for a good price, but its a shame because it had been in great shape till the cleaning .. this is the starting point, how I got it ..
<a href="http://badgerandblade.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=336825&d=1369429975" title="Name: 2013-04-30 19.23.02.jpg

so after some remodeling it turned out like this .. its not polished yet .. I'm musing do I start over with lower grit or leave it as it is .. because I started with 600 grit up to 2000 .. there is some "scaring" left but at least its all silver now no blackness .. I was thinking about making it the original shape .. but then it would have gotten much shorter looking .. so instead I made it square point with a little "horn" sticking up above
<a href="http://badgerandblade.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=336826&d=1369430050" title="Name: 2013-05-24 22.28.53.jpg
what got me baffled is the writings .. everything is written on German except Germany haha I expected it to be Deutschland not Germany.

It has the following markings .. Garantie Solingen - Silber Stahl on the box and on the blade .. also on the tang other side it has No 580x1/2 Germany. It's a hollow 6/8 blade. Also on the blade there is etching of a crown with a hearth in it and a cross on top the hearth and a ribbon backing with the Silber Stahl written left and right of the crown. There is little ghosting still visible on the blade even after the sanding.

I was going to post this in my shaving journal, but I decided to post where it may get some more traffic. As I completed my 50th straight razor shave today, I reflected on the lessons learned in the past few months - specifically, I thought about all of the help I've gotten from this forum. In particular there have been a few members who have really helped me push through a few sticking points in my learning curve, and I want to take a moment to thank them publicly. Without their help, I'm not sure I would have stuck it out.

The first member I'd like to thank is global_dev. When I was first started honing, Jon offered to analyze some of my honing work and provide some constructive criticism. He took the time to send pictures of the edge as he received it, then also what it looked at after finishing it off on one of his JNats. It continues to be a really useful tool for me. Since then, he's suffered through all my nit-picky questions about how he maxes out an edge, how he sets a bevel, etc. It's all stuff I'm sure he has answered a hundred times, but he always provides a fast response and does so without the slightest hint of annoyance.

Next up is life2short. A while back, Scott offered some free honing on his coticules, on which I took him up. I shot him a PM and explained that I had two razors that needed honing: one smiling wedge, and a standard 5/8". I told him that I would prefer to get the wedge honed, but I also realized that required more attention, so if his time was stretched thin, I'd be more than appreciative to have him hone up the easier one. His response: just send both. He had them sent back out the same day he received them. A while after that, I posted in a thread that I was struggling with my own coticule. He took it upon himself to reach out to me and offer to provide an edge analysis like Jon did. I sent him my rock and a couple of razors - he provided feedback on areas of improvement, commentary on my stone, and two finished razors that are far better than I'll be able achieve anytime soon. Also like Jon, he has endured my endless questioning about how to improve my coticule honing, what to look for in future stones, etc.

Last is a member I've just recently started conversing with, Bayamontate. I purchased a JNat from him from the BST, which had the explicit expectation that no slurry stone of any sort was included. I received my package to find the JNat along with a "surprise" that Nelson mentioned in a PM - the surprise was a beautiful tomo, which pairs extremely well with the stone. In his explanation of the pairing he said something to the effect of "The two just work so well together, there was no chance I couldn't include it." Additionally, he provided some great info about the nuances of the stone and how he has max'ed out his edges on it. Furthermore, when he reads a post where I mention I've used the stone, he'll shoot me a note to see if I have any questions or any issues. It's clear that he really loved this stone, and he wants to make sure I get as much enjoyment from it as he has.

So that's all for now. Members like these three are the reason this forum is such a great thing to be a part of. They're generous with their time, and they're genuinely interested in making sure us new guys have the help they need to continue this great hobby/pastime/lifestyle of ours. I can't thank them enough for their mentorship - but I do hope to be able to pay forward the generosity they've shown me (when my talents warrant it). Jon, Scott, and Nelson, you guys are all class acts, and I truly appreciate all you've done to help me out.

I have just left the review section after reading what BBers had to say about SCS soaps and creams. Without fail, each products received 9s and 10s in the categories that I think are most important -quality, efficacy, lather, etc. I'm not a scent guy but they did quite well in that department as well. The obvious question is why isn't there more noise about their products. Have they somehow been eclipsed by newer artisans? I am just surprised that with ratings like they receive that people are not buzzing about them, right up there with Mikes, MW and QCS, etc. What the Hades is going on? We want great products, do we not? What say ye?

P.S. This includes me - I've never bought a SCS product but that will change in the near future.

Also, when I joined BB, Sue was one of the first members to welcome me.

None of them can shave and all have nasty plastic scales.
2 are in very good conditions. Seems to still be above 6/8, and 2 are a bit shorter, but still not bad.
Now comes the next phase, restoration.
I initially intended to do the work myself, but a few set-backs in my other projects and lack of time are pushing me to consider other options.

Anybody interested?
I got 4, but really only need one or two, so I am open to trading restoration work for Filarmonicas.

Hello everyone.

I need some help to choose a razor, the problem is budget and shipping (international).
I was searching on ebay and the good razors like DOVO are at $140.00, so searching more I found two razors that I know aren't recommended but maybe with a little work can do a good shave:

The FROST 40th Anniversary straight razor for $33.00. I know this is a Chinese razor
F40148SMS-STAG-PEARL-RAZOR_0002.jpg

And I found some Hen & Rooster razors, all of then have a SPAIN in the back, for about $50.00. The problem is, where the metal is manufactured, since Hen & Rooster was bought by FROST it may also be manufactured in China or Pakistan or somewhere else, maybe it's manufactured is Spain or even in Germany, I DON't KNOW. Also note that on the Hen & Rooster website (http://www.henandrooster.com/default...stvalue=Razors) there are models with SOLINGEN on them for $93, and there are models without SOLINGEN for $80 .

WITHOUT SOLINGEN (ebay)

So what is the best?

If someone know a place I can buy quality razors for a good price+shipping I would be very happy.

So I purchased a Brian Brown (BB) razor from fellow B&B member MilkyLee (Dusty) and I felt that it needed honing after several uses. There's so many great hone meisters on here and Dusty even offered to hone it for me. I finally decided to contact Brian and ask for him to hone it. It made sense to me since he created the blade.

Brian was nice enough to even hone it for free! I offered to pay for return shipping but he refused so I'm taking the money I saved and offering up a $25.00 gift certificate to any B&B supporting vendor of the winner's choice!

How to Enter

We all love pictures so post as many pictures as you'd like of pictures that you've taken of your BB razor(s). If you have more than one BB razor, then you can create a separate post for each additional BB razor thus increasing your chances of winning.

Enter in at least your country for your location in your profile. Enter your state/province and/or city too if you'd like. See how my location says 'Atlanta, GA'? This can be found under 'Settings' then 'Edit Profile'; it's under the 'Additional Information' section.

Winner Selection

The winner will be selected using Random.org on or around June 30th, 2013. The post number will be your entry number.

Here are pictures that Dusty took of the BB razor that I purchased from him; I haven't had a chance to take my own pictures yet. I love Brian's work. I'll probably purchase another razor from him sometime in the future. If you haven't had a chance to visit Brian's website yet, he does have a gallery of his work posted.

I'm pretty new around here, so not sure of the protocol for something like this, but hopefully I can help someone out without violating any rules.

While traveling up part of the east coast last week, I stopped frequently in antique stores/malls to look at straights. Since I haven't even started the straight-shaving journey yet (got all the gear--I think I'll start this weekend), I'm mildly interested in what's out there, but no real designs on being a collector or restorer, and no ability to hone either. Can't say I know enough to look for when shopping other than superficial looks and a few well-known brands. I usually only ran into one or two straights in each shop, almost all in nasty condition (rust, chips, broken scales, etc.). Nothing jumped out at me until I made a stop in Delaware.

There, the owner had two nondescript straights on display. I asked if she had any more, and surprisingly, she pulled out a small chest that had maybe 4-5 dozen straights in it--$25 each. Again, not really knowing much, I saw two Wade & Butchers (wedges, but not the really big ones) in pretty nice condition, so I grabbed those. I had two more other razors I can't recall I was interested in if I could get a deal. She told me since I had first dibs on the collection, she wouldn't cut me a break; I only bought the W&B's.

Everything else was in pretty good shape; a few cracked scales, but no rust or major damage that I can tell.

When I was checking out, she offered to sell me the whole batch for $600. My wife would've killed me if I walked in the door spending that much money on something I know almost nothing about.

If anyone here is in Delaware and wants to check this shop out, send me a PM for the name--probably makes more sense than just posting it here.
