I shaved for years with a Merkur and Merkur blades, got into vintage Gillette and now modern stainless. With the two former I had to shave everyday and could bust out a BBS shave in ten minutes flat. No issues except the occasional rushed nick here and there. Now I shave because I enjoy it, or at least I did until now. I have switched blades and razors to no avail. I used to use a 5 dollar shave brush that was kicked down to me and now I use a Parker silvertip brush. My soap of choice as a former vegitarian was Body Shop Macca root then AOS. I have been using a small well known tallow based hard soap and it hasn't worked for me, even VDH worked better (I bought a vintage OS mug I really wanted to use...). standard B&B prep and followed the hard soap method in the wiki, live in the NW and don't have hard water. I found an old jar of Body Shop cream and just got a perfectly great shave so after all that here are my questions:

User error. I just can't lather a soap or am I missing something about tallow?
Does anyone know if Body Shop is glycerine based being vegan and all?
Could my face just hate tallow and freaking love Macca root?
Is the brush too soft? I have only the Parker left...

I know I should use what works for me but I want to know why it is working so much better so i can steer myself in a different direction (plus this forum doesn't help in using the same thing over and over..). I like supporting small hand craft so I would like to support that over Body Shop if possible. Thanks for reading and any advice would be great.

Hey guys, i've been meaning to get into this for awhile, problem was when this style of shaving got real popular with the "art of shaving" brand coming into the mainstream the closest store was in vegas, so i mostly ignored it.

I took note that someone locally opened up a startup company thats sold through his own barbershop here locally, called "barbershop brand". where you can get a saftey razor, and associated starter kit products all for less than $100.

however i also noted that a vintage store opened up locally and had a number of straight, and safety razors each for about $17-35 for the razor alone.

which is a better option?

will a saftey razor hack up my face? how easy is it to nick your face with them?
i fear this becuase there was a youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qSIP6uQ3EI) of a user "teaching" his viewers how to do a wetshave but his face was covered in nicks, yet all the guides i've looked at say his guide is great?

also i've heard some chatter about the van der hagen brand stuff at walmart being decent so for $10 i bought the starter set. included a bowl, badger hair brush and soap.

is wilkenson sword brand razors any good? there was a pack of 10 for $1.76 at walmart next to the starter set.

so this for a low cost entry level setup:

Razor: Barbershopbrand new or vintage???
Blades: wilkenson sword DE (made in germany ones)
Brush: van der hagen Boar, plastic handle
Soap: Van der hagen (there is an $0.86 soap at a food store i might try as well says all natural)

decent?

Just broke out the Williams after a month of trying other soaps, and following a wonderful shave with my new favorite razor (birth year Gillette Tech) I splashed on some AV when the light bulb went on. These products compliment each other extremely well for me. Sure, Williams' scent seems to have mixed responses here and Av gets lots of love, but to my nose, once AV settles down, it has a very clean, fresh scent just like Williams.

Do you experience similar with a Williams/AV combo?

Does this synergy happen with other product families?

I had heard about WCS through another B&B member and decided to give them a try. I had been ordering most of my shaving supplies either through amazon or shavenation, but both had pretty limited supplies. I ordered some D.R. Harris hair tonic, pinaud talc (a must have!), and some GFT lime skin food. I received my package in about 5 days (in Afghanistan; not bad WCS) in good shape. Unfortunately they had replaced the lime skin food with coral (and honestly I couldn't stand the smell). I wrote them about it and was suprised by their response.
I expected a, "hey, sorry about that.....have a good day." Not these guys. They wrote back quickly saying, not only are we sending you the right stuff, but email us the postage you have to pay to send us the Coral and we will give you that money back. This retailer responded with a name and not just a company title and offered a really admirable service.
I now highly recommend WCS. They are extremely professional, have genuine concern for their customers, and deliver in a very timely manner.

So, I am seriously considering the Moss scuttle and the Ayars lather bowl. Narrowing down my scuttle / bowl choice was hard enough, now I need to decide on size (small or large) scuttle and color.

As for size, I think the small will be fine since I will not be lathering in the scuttle and the less lather exposed to the air the better (just my theory). A few members have traded PMS and been very helpful but I would like more input.

Regarding color, I think the cobalt blue is a striking contrast to the lather. For some reason, the cobalt reminds me of an old, classic apothecary type piece. I also like the Anniversary slate and Robbie Burns.

With all due respect to the other scuttle owners, please only post your experience(s) with Sara's pieces. Also, please post pics if you have them.

I am open to the "don't get a scuttle, you won't use it" posts as well.

Thanks in advance!

I've noticed as of late when I used eucalyptus based products, I get a sniffly, sneezy, watery eye reaction for a little bit afterwards. Its not severe, but annoying.

Currently I have and used Razorock 888 soap, AS Lotion, S. Maria cream and TFS Freschezza Polare soap. Doesn't seem to matter what combo I use, but I always pair a eucalyptus soap with the 888 AS Lotion. The allergy like issue happens every time. I tend to be sensitive in the nose to florals and perfumes/colognes, so they don't come anywhere near me. But the eucalyptus thing is kind of new, and seems a little out of the norm to be bothered by. Guess I won't be able to use these anymore.

So I'm just curoius, does it bother anyone else this way too?

Well I put a Feather blade in my Joris yesterday and shaved. I got 3 nicks on my neck and 1 on my upper lip. I was surprised. If you put a Feather blade in an aggressive razor you do have to be extra careful.
