The holidays have come early! Not only a fantastic shave this AM (finally, BBS!) but my growing shave-related acquisition disorder just won the following off of ebay....
120 Derby blades for $13.99 (~$0.12 ea) -- 2+ yr. supply for me.
'50s Gillette Super Speed for $6.99 + shipping.
I shoulda played the lottery today too.
Best to all !

Just bought a lump of alum at the continental christmas market in Belfast. It is about twice the size of a golfball and cost £7. It is primarily for use as a deodorant but I will give my face a go after shaving in the morning.
The stall also had something called 'Alleppo olive oil' soap which the stallholder said made excellent shaving soap. Anyone tried it?

All of my orders from Charles have had a sampler of some kind of Trumpers shaving creme in it. He even puts a Trumpers sticker on the outside of his packages to boot but has never forced me once to buy Trumpers when I asked him his opinion about a scent. :)
That's odd, since I've never had that experience with Trumper and Charles - although admittedly I haven't placed an order for a few months.
Just to be clear, I didn't mean to imply any criticism of him or his practices whatsoever. Charles is an exceptional gentleman and his service is second to none. Boy I need to get an order in so that I can contribute to this thread more often...

Yes, Tadé is a brand for savon d'Alep (Syrian soap) but It's a french company. I didn't find their shaving soap on their website and I can't remember what's the name of the french store in Paris. I'll send you a pic of it (soap) . Here is the website : www.tade.fr/. I also use an other Alep soap in the shower. Great products!

I've been using Aleppo Olive Oil Soap for almost a week now. It is excellent stuff. I'd never tried OO soaps before, so this was a new experience. It doesn't lather as well as other soaps, and it is quite slick. But boy does my skin feel good afterwards.
The standard soaps out there (Ivory, Irish Spring, etc.) strip all essential oils off my skin and dries it out. The more expensive soaps are better, but I still find the need to apply moisturizer on my face or some sort of body lotion after I shower. With this stuff, there's hardly a need. My skin feels really good afterwards -- completely clean, and completely moisturized. I probably don't need to put moisturizer on my face, but I'm still doing it out of habit.
If you're used to soaps with flowery scents, this stuff will likely disappoint you. It smells like olive oil. If you need to smell pretty afterwards, apply some aftershave or cologne.
Thumbs up for this stuff.

Belfast is not terribly good for Quality shave stuff. One shop on the Lisburn Rd has a limited range of Trumpers, and L'Occitane has just opened a shop. If you call into TK Maxx in coleraine you should be able to pick up some Taylors creams and bath soaps at a good price.

A short while ago, I menioned having won an ebay auction for a Gillette Superspeed for $6.99 + shipping. Well, it arrived today... I was surprised at the near mint condition. all nice and shinny, etc. I was wrong, however, about the date. It's not a '50s model TTO, rather a 1966 (Date code L3) model. Right now, I'm steralizing it in prep for tomorrow's shave.
Is this one of the reliable shavers? I seem to remember someone mentioning that not all the late 50s/early 60s models were good.

Thanks.
That razor set me back a bit. And combined with recently sending out about three thousand law school apps, as well as my plan on purchasing the B&B brush, I promised myself not to buy anything shave related until March. Unfortunately I already have my eye on this (http://www.shavingshop.com/index.php?item=330&ret=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.shavingshop.com%2Findex.php%3 Fpage%3D1%26category%3D73) and this (http://www.shavingshop.com/index.php?item=287&ret=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.shavingshop.com%2Findex.php%3 Fpage%3D2%26category%3D74) and this (http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/846013/563795.htm) and this (http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/522940/190248.htm).
Fortunately there is just no way I can afford that stuff and still afford to eat, so I think, at least in this case, resistance may not be futile.

Really? Why is that? Both of the brands (at least I think) have good reputations over at SRP.

Well, the "Badger & Blade Decant Club" on the bottle might give you a clue.

The "brands" are great - Heribert Wacker (the guy who grinds/finishes the blanks) is not. Those pictures do not do the horrid build quality, and fit and finish justice... they make TI's look extremly well built. I'll be posting a review of my wacker razor - but I had an 8/8 henckels and a 6/8 quarter hollow wacker, and both of 'em were REALLY pathetic. The Fridur so much so - he had me send it back (it was scratched to all hell, the handles were absolutly miserable, the grind on the razor was uneven, etc) and the Wacker is equally as pathetic - although unable to send back for some reason - but the scales are ridiculously uneven, so much so the razor cannot sit on the scales, it must be laid flat (if you try to sit it upright as I do and store EVERY other razor I own, it will immediatly fall over as the scales are THAT uneven) the blade is in really pathetic shape for a $200 razor, the "spanish point" is scratched to hell at the end - as it seems to be beyond Heriberts skills/abilities, the third pin is not spaced out right, and the damn tang bumps up against it - so often you cannot open the razor, instead you must jostle the tang against the third pin a bit until it moves around enough to allow the tang/monkey tail to clear, the razor was supposedly "honed" but wasn't even remotely close to shaving sharp (and the honing was a hefty $20) just scratched up even more, the spacer at the end of the scales is not properly sized and sticks out a touch, the horn scales are really sad, incredibly thin and are drastically inferior to TI horn scales, the blade is "satin" finished, not mirror polished, which is absurd for a razor so expensive, as TI's are LESS expensive and mirror polished (which is more expensive to do) and so on and so forth.... not to mention - even when properly honed they really are just decent shavers, not better in any way shape or form than a Dovo... oh yeah - dovo's that are "hollow ground" tend to be close to 1/4 hollow anyway - only their singing razors have the full hollow, so why buy a Wacker made razor? Well... your guess is as good as mine, but one thing to consider... most people are quite fond of the owner of shavingshop.com and don't wish to voice their concerns, but when I posted mine for sale on this forum saying I didn't like it - I got an overwhelmingly large amount of highly experienced straight razor shavers voicing similar concerns to the ones I have/had with my razors from that establishment. It seems as I am not the only one who had received really piss poor quality razors from shavingshop.com
When the review comes out - and the pictures show up, it'll stun you.
For as razor this expensive, without question (I mean not even a contest) don't even consider them as an option - go straight to TI if you want the best shaving razor for the $. For LESS money than that Dorko you posted you were considering, you can get a 6/8 Leaf and Vine TI, or an 7/8 or 6/8 blonde or black horn TI, or even a limited edition frame back or art deco. For just a few dollars more, you could pick up one of the new/slick ebony handled wheat berry, or grass hatching (spine carved models) Or a limited edition Horn Covered Tang model (outta this world shaver with a 100 year old blade) or the 6/8 flat back white bone.... the options are limitless.
You know... while were at it - you could also pick up a Dovo 5/8 Stainless GENUINE mother of pearl handled dovo for $15 less, which in person looks nicer than ANY razor out there (the beauty and simplicity of this razor, coupled with its size, shape, etc - look nicer than ANY razor I own.... including my Maestro, etc) AND - it'll outshave the hell outta the wacker razor. In fact, personally I find Dovo stainless blades to be among the best shaving razors on the market when properly tuned up. Buy one - and i'll hone it up for you, gratis.

Good thoughts Joel, I almost bought one of these back in october based on these comments here:
Just as a heads up, I spoke with John C. today, and we chit chatted a bit - and he feels the 1/4 ground razors are the best he sells (shave wise) every bit as good as his $600+ damascus razors! Another neat little factoid - the 1/4 ground blades are apparently a major PITA to make - and Wacker didn't want to make them at first. Apparently there were only 60 blanks left - IN THE WORLD, and the cast to make more is broken - so they will never be made again... John/Wacker bought all 60 of 'em - and Wacker ruined one of the 60 farmiliarizing himself with grinding the 1/4 hollow - so there are only 59 of these suckers... on earth! IF you want one.... better jump quick!

60 blanks my #@%$# - 30-40 magically seem to appear as some great "super last ultra mega find from the last blade cache onthe planet!!!!" in every order.... :thumbdown

Wow!
Thanks for the advice Joel. I actually have already bought the 1/4 hollow razor that shavingshop sells and it seems fine to me, but after that rant I'll reconsider buying from there again.
picked up the l'occitane cade soap & bowl combo.
expensive, but that bowl is very, very nice.

DJ, was the Florida water a local pickup? I see it's a Goya brand, so I was curious. I've not seen Goya products on this side of the US.
I bought this with every intention of using it but considering it has a box and appears to be unused, I may just hold on to it...but I don't think I have the will power to not try it! There are no date markings on it, only "Gillette" and "Made in England", so does anybody know how old this thing might be?

The antique shop where I found it also had a bunch of old straights so I have some learning to do before I head back there!
