Hey guys,

I've been trying a bunch of different toothpastes lately. I'm using Marvis Strong Mint right now, but it has alluminum in it, which doesn't please me. (Rembrandt has that in it, too.) A couple I've liked so far are Tom's of Maine Fennel and Dr. Burt's Lavender-Mint. Tom's toothpastes come in several different formulations though, so you really have to sort through them all to find what you want.

Does anybody have any toothpaste recommendations?

I really like the Tom's stuff. It is a pleasant, well performing product that is affordable and pretty easy to find.

I've got a question about Marvis. I can get it at Macy's for $8-9. My question is this: Is this any better than, say Crest? I've been using Crest Cinnamon Rush for about 6 months, & I really like it, but I'm extremely curious about Marvis. Is there anything special about it to justify a price tag that's 2-3 times higher than what I'm using now?

Some people swear by Marvis and it does contain a lot of an an alluminum ingredient that is apparently a great whitener. I just don't like the idea of ingesting small amounts alluminum on a daily basis. It does foam great - you only need a little bit, and it makes your breath really minty. I wouldn't slam it, I'm just looking for a more natural product of equal effectiveness.

I've tried a lot of exotic toothpastes, but keep circling back to Orginal Colgate. good stuff, great minty flavor :thumbup1:

The thing that has been stopping me from trying the non-supermarket toothpastes is that I get just fine results with the regular stuff - haven't had a cavity in 10 plus years. Is Mavis and the others equally as effective?

any toothpaste should be "effective". IMO: proper brushing and flossing is more important....and it sounds like you've got that down.

Ultrabrite. Picked up a tube for $.99 at Wallmart or Target. Can't remember. Ultrabrite was also rated at the top in Consumer Reports.

I currently use Colgate Herbal ... I like it. I wrote 'currently' as I change my toothpastes according to what mother gives me :wink2: I second Joe's post that it is brushing and flossing what's important and not the toothpaste.

I use them all but always seem to go back to UltraBrite. It performs as good or better than the more expensive ones.

I normally use either Crest, Ultrabrite, Mentadent SR or Aquafresh. I would recommend them all.

I use any flouride and tartar control toothpaste. To me what really helps the mouth hygiene most is good electric toothbrush, flossing (From my experience most dentists say this is the most important thing we can do), and the Literine swish. Also, keeping a toothbrush around in the briefcase along with a bit of floss and Listerine is a great pick me up and keeps me feeling much cleaner throughout the day. Well, its not just keeping them around but using them. Also I drink lots of water throughout the day--avoid the colas and coffee after brushing in the morning--that just ruins everything.

don't leave out the flossing. there is some data out there suggesting that it lowers the risk of heart disease, in addition to helping prevent gum disease (which in adults is the big risk, as opposed to cavities in children).

the electric toothbrush also supposedly does a superior job on the gums compared to a manual brush.

as far as toothpaste and aluminum, there once was a scare about aluminum ingestion being linked to alzheimer's. i don't think it was ever substantiated, however. maybe i forgot!

Colgate TOTAL was until recently the only toothpaste that "prevents tooth decay, gingivitis, plaque above the gum line and bad breath". They claim 12 hours.

Recently Crest announced a new product(not yet on the shelves) that seems similar.

It took colgate years to get FDA approval to make the claim.

BTW I think Colgate owns Toms of Maine.

That is also what Consumer Reports concluded. Well, not exactly. I think they said it was both the best and the cheapest.

Give colgate total a shot. Great stuff. It uses triclosan as an antibacterial. That's the difference between it and regular colgate.

I used to use Tom's, and thought it did a fine job. Eventually though, I went back to plain old colgate or crest for the tartar control at my dentist's recommendation.

Presently using a Trader Joe's Toothpaste. Nothing special IMHO, but I feel that way about most every toothpaste. Good brushing technique and attention to oral hygeine (flossing, etc) pay the dividends.

Brush, don't rush. Only floss the ones you want to keep.

Some kind of Colgate with the breath strips in it. Until I talk to my dentist about flouride and using a toothpaste without it, I'm sticking with the flouridated varieties.

I usually use the Colgate Total toothpaste with an Oral-B cordless toothbrush.
I got the new Crest Pro Health toothpaste since it was a buy one, get one free special. I prefer the Colgate Total. Scotty
Sometimes I like to use the original Crest toothpaste since I used that when I was young. :w00t:

It is important to know that all studies associating flouride with reduction of tooth decay are epidemiological - they are uncontrolled observational studies only - basically just a step up from anecdotal. The evidence associating tooth decay with population groups is stronger (meaning genetics/lifestyle/diet likely play bigger roles than fluoride)

This evidence that fluoride may prevent/halt tooth decay must be balanced with the fact that it is a directly cytotoxic substance - it kills cells. It is also a disruptor of many normal chemical reactions in the body because it binds with calcium.

All that said, the real exposure risk comes from fluoridated water more so than toothpaste. Most folks don't swallow toothpaste and therefore don't have much to worry about. BUT- be careful with kids! There is really no reason to use fluoride toothpaste on a child (ADA recommendations of pea sized amounts negate any benefit the fluoride would give). And above all avoid fluoridated water - you have no control over the dose!

Euthymol (http://www.expresschemist.co.uk/product_8375_euthymol-75ml.html)

This stuff tastes like, well it's hard to say. Kind of like a real strong antiseptic cream. It leaves your mouth feeling super fresh. It is very strong but I love it. Kind of leaves that fresh shave tingle feeling but in your mouth.

Hello,
By the way, I discovered (or should I say the doctor discovered) that I'm allergic to clove:cursing: I brushed my teeth with clove and cinnamon toothpaste from Tom's of Maine and had a really bad allergic reaction to it : had nearly no taste in my mouth for 2 days + swollen lips. Bloody hell : it was a bit frightening.
Well, I was proud to say that I wasn't allergic at all until now.....doctor said that a lot of people can have severe allergic reaction to clove.

Give colgate total a shot. Great stuff. It uses triclosan as an antibacterial. That's the difference between it and regular colgate.

Triclosan, as a web search will reveal, is not entirely uncontroversial, both in its usefulness and its toxicity. That said, the same goes for flouride (see various postings above), and I use my Tom's of Maine spearmint quite happily... I guess it's what you're comfortable with. – On a related note, I believe the much-vaunted Marvis contains parabens - unusually, though not uniquely for a toothpaste.

I used Jason's once (can't remember the variety), and it was really pleasant, though sadly it didn't work very well. There was a noticeable increase in plaque by the time I was through with the tube.

When in Germany, pick up some Ajona - concentrated, old-fashioned taste.

Started using Tom of Maine's Baking Soda/Peppermint. I must say it's not very minty. Not sure what it's doing for my breath after, I'm used to all those freshening chemicals in the big toothpastes. So far, I'm neutral on the new experience...
