I am looking to buy a great and reasonably priced straight razor roll. I am only going to have about 3 razors, so i was thinking 3-7 slots...
I guess I am just looking for something nice to travel with, someplace nice to put my oiled razors when i store them for a week or so.
I saw the TI 7-razor roll, and while it looks nice, it is 80 bucks. soo000...

I've seen Vgod post about rolls he makes. I don't know if he takes orders, but you could shoot him a PM.

I keep picking them up. Just bought a covered tang for a project that I have in my mind. I have become much more selective with my purchases though, as I have 4 or 5 that really shave well, and I don't "need" anymore.

If your den doesn't look like this yet, you haven't gotten past the "need" stage.

Neil Miller who is a member on this site in the Uk handmakes fantastic razor rolls in leather. He trades on Ebay UK and has a ebay shop called Millersmilitaria. The last time i looked he had plenty of different varieties for sale and at good prices.

If you want to go real cheap and utilitarian, but not at all shoddy, Harbor Freight has the best selection of tool/knife rolls for very inexpensive that I have ever run into.
Especially good if you have one near enough by and can go in and check them out. I had zero luck finding anything at all on their website: HarborFrieght.com.

Sure, three straights ... guess you haven't acquired a tasty case of SRAD yet, have you? Resistance is futile.
If you are considering storing razors in the roll for long periods, don't get one in leather. I have it from a good source that chemicals left over from the curing process can discolor and corrode the razors.

Huh, I guess I'll look for a hardware/cloth knife roll, or build my own--velvet-lined :)

Maybe check this out?
http://www.oliviaseife.de/messer.htm
Scoll to the bottom of the page to the krimskram section. First item there is a cool razor 'sock' made of felt that looks like you can order in a roll. Olivia is a member of B&B and the other straight razor forum.

That doesn't look like a bad idea. Maybe I'll find a way to get a hold of her. Thanks.

I was going to write about the same thing. Those razor socks grabbed my attention immediately. Olivia's web site seems very interesting and I am surprised that I had not heard about it until just a little while ago this evening. I think she is going to have a sudden influx of orders for lots of things!

My soaps--shaving and regular soaps--and my three razor roll arrived from Olivia yesterday.
This roll may be just what Samouraï was looking for. Very heavy felt, very well put together. Straight seams, for instance. Plain and straightforward, but classier looking than one might think. The thickness of the felt gives it sort of an luxurious look. Each slot seems to have plenty of room yet to really enclose the razor. I think it would give lots of protection to a razor, but still allow water to evaporate and the little. And I would not be worried about getting oil on the inside of it or anything. Seems perfect for traveling, unless one were going for the super hard case, sealed off with O rings approach.
I like it. But for day to day storage, rather than travel, I think I am liking the cigar box and foam approach, with dehumidifer packets, someone posted, that I put together with minimum skill. Gives lots of protection day to day, including from humidity and it is nice to be able to pop open the box and see all of the razors. .

Could you post some pictures of the roll? sounds pretty great. And how much was it?
Oh yeah, I posted the cigar box + foam + silica gel a bit back when I was trying to figure a storage solution. I like the idea of the roll more, though.

I have never actually taken a picture and posted it. Pretty lame, eh. I should learn how.

This photo is from her web site and it is actually pretty good with some explanation. http://www.olivia-soap.com/messer.htm , scroll down a bit to see it there. The photo has the ends of the razors sticking out, but each "sock" has more than ample enough to space inside to take the entire razor in, and for that matter I suppose one could put a silica gel pack at the bottom of the sock, too.
The razor that is lying on top of the sock in the foreground completely taken out of the sock gives a good idea as relative sizes. The design is very simple, just two identical pieces of very thick felt sewn together. Mine holds three razors, so there are seams along the outside on three sides, plus two seams (or maybe there are two close together sets of seams rather than just one) going parallel to the sides to divide what would otherwise be a big evelope into three compartments. There is no flap that goes over the opening to each compartment or anything like that, but the felt has enough friction and enough elasticity to grip the razor to hold it securely in place. No tie strings to hold things together if you rolled this up or anything. Left-side toward the top you can see five razors jutting out of what is probably a six-razor sock, which should give you a good idea of what the three razor version looks like.
The two razor sock on top of that one makes it seem like the razors are in the sock very tightly, almost straining at the seams. The compartments in mine must be a little bigger or something because there is not that strained appearance at all when mine has razors in it. The color of the felt itself is probably a very dark gray rather than a true black, but very "flat" and unreflective of light. The felt is much darker and richer looking in person than in the on-line photo. The seams are very straight and finished looking. Lots of stiches per linear inch I would say. It must take a powerful sewing machine to go through this material while staying so even. The whole thing looks very substantial and well-crafted.
Re cost: According to my records I paid 8.50 Euro for the three razor version. I think the deal is that a one razor sock is 3.50 Euro and the per compartment price goes down a bit as you add additional compartments to one unit. I think Olivia wrote me that she could make these so that the roll had virtually any number of compartments. I think she sews these herself. Like I said, she must have a powerful sewing machine, and a steady strong hand!
Ha!, that was you with the cigar box, the foam, and the silica gel. I thought that was great. I actually got a cigar box that had a plastic holder with slots for five perfecto shaped cigars in it. The slots happen to fit my razors amazingly well. Not as classy as, say, velvet, and I have been meaning to look around at something to line the plastic holder with, but it is pretty neat all the same. I would like a glass lid on the cigar box, but otherwise I am completely satisfied with this storage solution. I love this new roll, too. It is just that I cannot see what is inside each compartment. There is not much of a display aspect to it! That cigar box seems to stay bone dry, too.
If you order a razor sock from Olivia be sure to get some soaps--bath and shaving--too. The scents are nice, very masculine, and the soaps are amazingly moisterizing, and nice and slick. Not the best ever for lathering up as shaving soaps though. I am not sure that massive lather is really all that crucial anway and these certainly lather adequately.
