He has an instantly recognizable aesthetic. Good posting. Here's a toughie, but the frame should prove to be exactly enough to guess the film.

I'm only guessing here: Lynch's Mulholland Drive (2001)?

Samouraï

Nope, keep guessing.

edit: if you can work out what is in the frame/what is going on in the frame, you might be able to deduce its origin (as this frame encompasses the film completely).

it is not Paris, je t'aime, but it came out around the same time and was similarly popular. this one only had 3 films in it though. there is an American film, an Italian film, and a film from Hong Kong.

the cinematographer of this particular short film is as good as they come.

Without a doubt! Very engrossing film. Extra long but still the kind you are sad to reach the end of.

Burt Lancaster was very good.

Claudia Cardinale was absolutely stunning.

Oddly enough, my favorite version was in Italian, which I don't speak, subtitled in English. If I remember correctly the English dubbed version used Lancaster's actual English dialog but somehow this didn't seem to work out as well as the subtitled version where Lancaster was dubbed into Italian! Quite convoluted.

Yeah, the extended italian version from criterion is the end all from what i've seen (though there was some hub bub about the aspect ration).
