Hint Two: This film is not happy in any way. It's excellent, but gutwrenching.
Walter Sobchak
07-22-2009, 12:22 PM
Uh Oh, no guesses so far.
HINT THREE: It's Neo-Realist
HINT FOUR: It has a degree of relation to 'Kiss Of The Spider Woman', but it was released prior to KOTSW.
HINT FIVE: It's so depressing that one of my college housemates didn't get out of the fetal position for a full 24 hours after watching it. And vowed to never watch anything by this director again. OK, well, maybe that's not a real hint, but I want to underscore how much of a traumatic, documentary-styled film this is.

And how many movies from the early '50s has a crowd of stunned/shocked people staring up at their first glimpse of a flying saucer? 20? 50? 100? Too many for me to try to guess.
Also I want to buy a fedora.

Really? I looked up Superman in IMDB and the only thing in the early '50s with "Superman" in the title was the TV show. Hmmm --- maybe a more cleverly named Superman movie?
EDIT: Now I see the earlier screen shots. I like those skull caps! But it looks less like a Superman movie. Looks like the deck of a WWII submarine sitting out in the California sun somewhere on dry land. Invading Japanese Vaudeville troupe?

Gotta earn it!
OK, back to my last movie and some better (More accurate) clues 'cause I'm going to bed shortly.
It was made in Japan in the sixties.
It's based around a martial art/ sport that I practice and it's NOT judo.
The novel it was based on was by Yukio Mishima. (YM, sorry...)
And here's another pickie.

Legion
07-28-2009, 05:59 AM
No, from memory that movie was semi autobiographical. This one is just based on one of his books which I think is pretty much fictional.
And I dont think Mishima had anything to do with the production of the movie other than writing the book it's based on. I think he directed Yûkoku?

I've not seen it with that full title but I think you've got it.
I've only seen it called Ken (1964). (Ken meaning sword in Japanese, the sport being Kendo.) Well done Captain.
