Kent Soap (first outing)
Trumper's Coral Skin Food
King Of Shaves 24/8 post shave cream
First outing for the Kent soap, I picked up off of their ebay store. The wooden bowl was definitely "seconds" quality (cracks, chipped varnish letting water into the wood) but the soap is excellent, as expected from others' comments. Seems like I am OK with the lanolin, I was pretty sure I was tolerant to it, but I didn't actually know for sure until now  Lathered directly on the face, this is a nice, slippery soap.
A comfortable shave, although not as smooth as other recent shaves. I've been trying to learn my beard growth directions more intimately of late, with great results in terms of smoothness. But I was feeling dog rough this morning, forgot what I was doing, and regressed to my old ways. It's not the soap's fault, it performed as it should have !

I had a BBS yesterday and my face felt great (no burn or heat). However, I was getting signals this morning that my face would not enjoy even a single pass shave so I opted out. I'm still pretty smooth this morning so there should be no other issues.

Not so good. I felt tugging and the blade even skipped on my chin, did my usual 2 pass method N-S on the fist and 2nd is E-W on cheeks/chin S-N on neck.
I still feel like I have not even shaved and it shows too. I had lots of patching when I was finished, went over the areas again and still not smooth  I may not try them again if I don’t I will let you guys know and send them to someone who could use them (waste not).

I just experienced the worst shave of my life. Mostly due to the fact I'm giving my forearm a break from making lather. It hurts. I know it's not the norm, but it took me way way way too long to make CM 1752 on Sunday......
So, today I made lather on the face/brush with hardly any success. I haven't had razor burn this bad since being enlightened, and that was back in September. This shave using AOS, which my skin never liked, but I used, since they said, "it's meant to be used just as it is" Miserable.
Fortunately this time around I had Aquaphor ointment at the ready. :001_smile
I can't decide which shave was worse, yesterdays, from a can of goo, which resulted in lots of nicks, or today's, with the razor burn.
Duggo....

Another quick-and-clean, rather than ultra-close shave this morning. Just 2 of my normal 3 passes again today, with and across the grain, due to time constraints.
A very nice shave from the Sienna. Lathered directly on the face (this is my preferred way of working right now) technically there was enough for a 3rd pass (maybe more) but I felt a little guilty even "indulging" in 2 passes today  The scent is growing on me. Some scents just make me a bit nauseous first thing on an empty stomach. Proraso and Sienna are kings of this right now !
Meant to pick up the King Of Shaves 24/8 balm to let the Sienna scent linger, but auto-pilot gave me the L'Occitane
Buddy, that sure is a beauty. How does its shaving performance compare to your Chronik razor?
Not even close to the Chronik... I mean - not even remotely close. Don't get me wrong, the Maestro is the "best of the best" and as good as the best TI's and puma's - but I get a PERFECT BBS shave with ONE n/s pass with the Chronik. With ANY other razor I can do half a dozen n/s passes and not get BBS smooth without going against the grain.
Funny you should mention the Chronik.... I just re-scaled it with the extra TI Stamina scales I had, and man o man does it look sharp. I'll post a pic of it in my SOTD for tomorrow.

Hey Jeff,
Is that the WS pure badger or the boar/badger mix? I have the badger one and find it to be a very decent shaving tool. Doesn't shed either, unlike some high-end brushes.
crackstar
11-29-2006, 05:52 AM
Frederik, it's the boar/badger mix. It's a good brush, yet, I find somehow that my Omega boar brush is better for lathering a soap. On the other hand, this brush can work a cream up into a lather like crazy. I might use a cream with it tomorrow morning.

Joe, It's a fantastic brush. Works well with both creams and soaps. The bristles are not to stiff but still very dense. Also the price is very reasonable. A Chronik is a type of straight razor. To date - I have only heard of one other fella on the forums have one (on the yahoo SRP forum) and he was equally enamored with his, as I have been mine. The steel on this is unlike any other razor, looks almost liquid like (pictures do not do it justice) and it seems to defeat the laws of physics.... truly exceptional stuff. I used to mention it more often, but then i'd get all sorts of offers to buy it, so it makes it easier just to stay mum about the whole thing.
I haven't been testing the B&B brush much. I am awaiting a new version.

Yay, a full 3 passes this morning, although it looks like I missed a few stragglers on my neck below my chin. Ah the quest for perfection
My father in-law loves the Trumper's Coconut soap, but me, I'm not sure. He's making his comparison based on canned foam / gel, me I've tried quite a bit more. It was a decent shave, and the scent's good, but every time I use it, I'm left thinking there's something missing. Same with the Violet soap. I much prefer T&H Luxury Soap and Erasmic stick / bowl at the moment.

Took a couple days off from just about everything, including shaving... fighting a cold or something. 3 days growth should challenge even a Feather blade! Also I tried the lather without washing the beard area, as mentioned here:
http://www.badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=9745
So without further delays:
Hot shower
Conditioner on beard area
Taylor's Eton College cream
Merkur HD w/Feather blade (Day 3)
SR 3124
Proraso Liquid A/S Balm
SCS Embrace EdT
Lathered up first, then let it sit for a couple minutes... wiped it off with a hot towel and rinsed my face, then lathered again for the first of 3 passes. Niiiiiiiice and close. Very minor irritation, even tried a light ATG on my neck area, which is usually a recipe for disaster. I might not be able to go ATG grain on my neck... have to keep trying things.
All in all, I definitely like Kyle's recommendation to use your lather as the face wash/prep routine. I'll have to try that a few more times.

Thomas, for tomorrow, I'll use either a Palmolive stick, or the Erasmic bowl. That's going to be a hell of a tough decision to make. I find the Palmolive stick also gives wonderful skincare, very similar to the cream, and the Erasmic soap in the bowl smells so beautiful with great lather and also great skincare, but I haven't used it in a while.

Jeff
It certainly is good stuff Jeff  One thing I noticed about the lather was that it seemed to allow the razor to glide very smoothly without any instances of skipping whatsoever. With the soaps I'd used prior to this I found skipping to be more of an issue than with using the creams. Not with this stuff though, so I'd certainly recommend it to anyone out there.
I also bought the De Vergulde Hand shaving cream, which I'll probably try tomorrow.

Friday (caught a quick Feather Artist practice shave late evening):
Feather Artist Club DX Special w/Super Pro blade (smoothed on a cork)
C&E Best
C&E sienna cream
Trumper's Coral Skin Food
King of Shaves 24/8 balm
Quick 1 pass with the Feather. I've been so short of time, that the evening is the only time I am free to use it, and it's been a whole week I think. No complaints except for missing a few bits on the neck, and taking so long the cream started drying out !
Saturday:
Merkur HD w/Feather
C&E best
Classic shaving unscented soap w/ Lavender, Peppermint & Rosemary essential oils added (yum!)
Trumper's Coral Skin Food
L'Occitane CADE a/s balm
L'Occitane Eau de L'Occitan EDT
Great 3 pass shave, super smooth after last night's Feather Artist work
The Classic Shaving Soap gets a hard time on these forums, but I find it works beautifully if used traditionally, ie. lathered off the puck onto the face, no bowl. Truly, this was a great shave, and it's a very nice soap. I think it needs a lot less water (or rather a lot more soap) than many other soaps, otherwise it just evaporates. But get it right and it's spot on

QED Essential Rose Geranium Soap

B&B Summer AS by Mama Bear
Four passes (usually I only have time for three, sometimes only two and a touch-up). The QED Rose Geranium is over-the-top magnificent. Right now, I can't think of any product with a better scent or more luxurious lather. The lather for the fouth pass was still rich and thick. It is an amazing soap, especially for the price.
Cheap, simple witch hazel is great. It really puts out the fire and soothes.
Even though it's a cold day here, the Summer AS felt like the perfect ending.
It was BBS, but more important, it was a lovely experience.
I still would love to know how one might obtain De Vergulde Hand products in the U.S. Does anyone know?
